Watched this yesterday. I don't often find myself in the mood for a melodrama, but I had read so many glowing reviews that I decided to give it a shot. I really wanted to like it, and it wouldn't be accurate to say I disliked it. But I found myself underwhelmed. I was put off right in the beginning with all the f-bombs being thrown. Every other spoken word was "fuck." The dialogue just didn't feel genuine to me. As portrayals of emotionally repressed males go, I don't think Casey Affleck cleared the high bar set by Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain. Much of the happenings in the movie just felt contrived. The shock of the brother's death would have been more acute if it had been totally unexpected, rather than the result of a long-term illness where the family had been anticipating the worst for years. Matthew Broaderick's uncredited cameo pulled me right out of the movie. Sorry, but it's impossible for me to separate him from Ferris Bueller. 6.5/10. The acting is good across the board.
