Mass Deportations Round One

Law enforcement officers are not immune from laws against assault with a deadly weapon. If he pulls it, he better have good justification.

Found out tonight that a former coworker who showed up to court, as required to maintain their green card status, was deported because the US government is no longer allowing people from Venezuela, you know, a country we claim is smuggling drugs into the US and are potentially going to invade in the near future to claim asylum from.

Anybody want to help me out with this? You've got a country that our government claims is controlled by a horrific dictator and that we might have to invade to protect ourselves from the evil shit said dictator is doing, but we see no reason to offer protection to people fleeing said dictator. How does that make sense? Shouldn't we be wanting to have as many of those folks in the US as possible to bolster our case for invading that country? And if we truly believe that the dictator is horrific, aren't we the bad guys for sending people back to that country instead of giving them protection from the dictator?

It depends on the context and the circumstances.

The standard rightwing justification for police brutality is "If they would have cooperated they wouldn't have been beat up". Interesting contrast with the idea that "if a law enforcement person pull's a gun he/she/they better be ready to use it." *Aside* I would also think that applies to concealed carry people. Otherwise why have it?

So if an ICE agent pulls a gun on you without identifying himself, you feel you are justified to fire first?

Yes, it's a serious question. The context is pretty fucking clear: you're on the street, someone wearing a mask, not showing ID grabs you and starts to throw you in the back of an unmaked van/car. Are you going to answer it, more clearly? Or are you going tojust assume that you're white enough that it won't happen to you?

True story: thirty years ago a friend of mine was in a band called The Dead Crickets. Started off punk-ish, but ended up being more rockabilly.
