Hate to be *that* response but, no, gerrymandering cannot effect statewide races directly. I keep seeing people say "axshually Texas is a purple state but gerrymandering..." and - no. There's a theory floating around out there which I can't be bothered to look up the details but broadly, it posits a connection between the "accidental" drowning of his sister-in-law and Mitch deciding to "step back" and stop using his leadership power to counter Trump's will (as already limited as his occasional opposition was) I take no position on something I haven't looked into at all but I am not at all skeptical that the radicals are capable of Putin-style persuasion.
