There's little follow up on it. :chris: Technically in Georgia all a store can do is ask you to leave if you have a gun if it's store policy . If you don't leave then the cops will make you leave and if you press the issue it's trespassing. But having a shitload of guns and making a beeline for the bathroom? Was he trying to prove a 2nd Amendment point? I don't get it.

Watched too many action movies. Have you ever noticed that typically the more guns someone brings to a mass shooting, the less people they end up shooting? It looks like 6 is the magic number for never even getting one shot off.

Rico Marley charged after allegedly entering Atlanta Publix with six loaded guns and body armor - CBS News

"The man, who Atlanta police have identified as 22-year-old Rico Marley, was charged Thursday with five counts of criminal attempt to commit a felony and six counts of possession of a firearm during commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies."

Okay, so what were the felonies Rico was allegedly going to commit? :chris: Maybe there is no more news because the investigation is ongoing. Maybe the authorities don't want people to panic and think this is a growing trend. One thing that was a smart play was giving Rico a mental evaluation right off the bat.

Anyway here's a current AJC page - no more details about about the Rico Marley arrest. What were his intentions? :chris:

Maybe he figured that he'd get whitey before whitey got him. Or, perhaps he was just bugfuck crazy. But, hey, guys being able to do things like that is just the price of freedom, right?

Your visual aid was akin to saying that since the odds of my ever getting breast cancer are vanishingly low, it's not something I should ever think about. Nevermind the fact that I know plenty of people who are at risk of getting it, have lost friends because of it, or that I just don't like the idea of anyone having to endure needless suffering, regardless of it is something that I'm likely to experience. The odds of you dying from a foreign nation invading the US are incredibly low, so does that mean we should look at completely disbanding the US military? I mean, the two closest countries to us are Canada and Mexico, neither of whom seems inclined to do such a thing, and nobody else can significantly project the kind of military force needed to invade us, so why have a military? I mean, the worst attack we've seen in the past 50 years came from a few nutters on airliners, and only 3K people died, so what's the big fucking deal, amirite? You think that anyone on a plane today who hears that it's being hijacked is just calmly going to sit there? I'm pretty sure that they'll do everything they can to stop the hijackers, even if it means their own deaths, so let's get rid of airport security, sky marshalls, and all that. They're not needed at all. That's probably a trillion or so dollars we can cut from the Federal budget if we do away with such things. So why not do it and give everybody a tax cut?

And hey, even if someone actually does decide to invade us, or hijack planes to crash them into buildings, the majority of Americans will survive, so what's the big deal?

    Another perspective on that:

Since all Americans die (duh!), that means that one American out of 160 is murdered. And one out of 80,000 is murdered in a mass shooting.

In a city like Atlanta, that means that over 3000 of the people currently living in the city will eventually end up being murdered. And 6 of them will be murdered in mass shootings.

In a state like Georgia, it means that that over 60,000 of the people currently living there will eventually end up being murdered. That's like the entire population of Smyrna or Marietta. And about 132 of them will be murdered in mass shootings.

I don't think that graphic means what you think it means. I think it shows that there is a real problem in American society, and that people like you are so used to it you consider one person out of 160 being murdered to be just "business as usual".

    That is appalling.

^ Can't respond to my explanation, huh? All you can do is complain about people not agreeing with you.

With that approach, don't wonder why you don't convince people of your point of view.

Shouldn't we try to get that number as low as possible?

Yes we should, balanced with not losing any more liberty than necessary. IMHO we as a nation can strike that balance not just with gun control, but in other areas. I just don't feel that gun control is any bigger deal than the other issues we face. "What I care about is more important than what you care about" isn't very productive no matter who you are or what your political leanings.

As for gun control it's not binary. I support some of the "common sense" gun controls but not all of them, and many gun owners feel the same way. But generally because it is a long process (as well it should be) when gun controls are implemented, they cover several separate issues and it ends up being somewhat of a compromise, again as it should be in a democratic constitutional republic.

So then we define 'necessary', and balance that against people's lives.

We've seen that play out far, far differently in dozens of places that have not fallen into tyranny - indeed, are farther away from that than our own situation by every political index.

We absolutely can differ on what is important, but when you devalue human life, we tend to devalue your 'opinion.'

And the data overwhelmingly shows that guns are a negative, not a positive, when looking at human life, and for every gun death, there's double or triple that of gunshot wounds, with a massive cost in of themselves, which your side never, ever mentions.

alcohol is a negative, not a positive. Yes there are some controls but not enough. I think we can implement a complete ban - any thoughts?

    Absolutely agree.

Again with the binary thinking: "all or nothing".

We definitely can put in stronger and stronger controls, which is what we have been doing. Drinking age at 21 (and complete ban before that), ban on consumption when you are going to be operating a car or doing anything else that requires control of youself, ban on public drunkeness... As you say, it wouldn't hurt at all to add even more.

Not to mention that alcohol imposes its own strict control on how far you can go with it: consume too much, and you pass out and/or die.

Would you be in agreement for guns, since you think this comparison means something? No one allowed to own or use a gun under the age of 21, complete ban on carrying under circumstances that could be deemed a public menace (such as when you are angry), no public carry in a way that could be a concern to others, and a strict and serious limit on how big and powerful guns you can have? All of that would work for me.

How many of those deaths are bad guys, accidents, and suicides?

"Dead bad guys" belongs firmly in the "positive" column, but I don't see that acknowledged.

Too easily abused. People can claim to be "concerned" by anything at any time.

holy crap some of these are wide open for abuse or interpretation or unenforceable. "Deemed a public menace"? How would you quantify that? What you consider threatening could vary widely from what I consider threatening. Use a gun under 21? Some states already have a limit on handgun age (often 21) but to use a gun in general? Pointless since a lot of kids hunt. Under certain ages they already have to accompanied by an adult, so it's not like 10 year old kids are running around with guns, unless they are already criminals anyway. But an 18 year old kid who has passed the Hunter Safety Course and is out hunting or target shooting is no problem.

A limit on what types of guns you can legally have? There's already a ban on fully automatic weapons, unless you pay a lot of money for the special ATF license and extensive paperwork. As for "big and powerful guns" that are semi-auto or pump action or whatever, I see no need for limits. If you want to shoot a .58 caliber muzzle loader is that more of a "danger" than a .38 caliber revolver?
The .58 caliber muzzle loader has way more power, but not many people get killed with one compared to a .38 revolver. It should be a matter of personal preference what type of gun you want to use.

So last night a bit after midnight my gf was startled awake by a loud pop and what felt like debris hitting her face.

    Turned out to be drywall.

Thankfully the wall absorbed almost all the energy so the bullet just landed on her bed and didn’t do anything.
