This could be awesome. MechWarrior II Mercenaries was my favorite game of the series, but the fighting was the least enjoyable part. I loved the command part way more. Hiring and firing mercs, building up my armory. Choosing contracts. This could be all that and much, much more.

Or it could be a total bust and I'm out $135. Oh well. That's why they call it gambling and not investing.

Annoyance. Some of the concept art was released:

    titsarentheatsinks.jpg

There are basically two parts of a mechwarriors 'uniform' that are required:

    1) Neurohelmet - Needed to operate the 'mech
    2) Cooling Vest - Your sitting on top of a nuclear reactor. Lots of heat generated. Cooling vests (along with heat sinks) are needed to keep the mechwarrior from cooking.

The kidneys are some of the most heat sensitive organs in the human body (along with brain and heart). Not to mention there are a couple other organs down there and a shitton of blood vessels. It's fucking idiotic that a female's cooling vest wouldn't cover her entire torso. TITS AREN'T HEAT SINKS!

In a universe full of awkward, inefficient, 40-foot-tall fusion-powered walking targets shooting high-powered beams of energy at each other.....it's an exposed midriff on a female mech pilot that finally makes you go "Whoa, whoa! Let's get a little realistic here"?!?!

Both the men have arms fully exposed all the way up to their shoulders.. Not very realistic in a high-temperature situation the requires mechanically-cooled outerwear either.

No. In universe mechwarriors pilot in their underwear to help stay cool. Also during bootup medpatches are attached to chest, upper arms and thighs. Be hard to get to if fully clothed.

In the universe having a cooling vest that only covers half the torso makes no sense whatsoever.

And of course sci-fi is sci-fi. Thanks for the reminder. Doesn't mean that within that universe materials shouldn't be internally consistent/rational.

Is it really consistency with the Battletech universe that triggered the annoyance, or a Sarkeesian-esque reflex at any mildly sexual portrayal of women in video games? That's probably a topic better suited for the Red Room.

Looking at some of the deliverables on the Kickstarter page, I see they have schematics for the Warhammer, which makes me wonder if they're going to have the other models that were part of the FASA/Macross lawsuit debacle (Rifleman, Battlemaster, Shadow Hawk, Marauder, a few others I can't remember).

Those 'mechs are known as the Unseen, and Piranha Games has got around that problem with Mechwarrior Online by redesigning them some. No reason this bunch couldn't do the same.

 She really is y'all's boogiewoman!

To answer your question though, gamergate really did expose alot of the just accepted sexist BS in games. I probably wouldn't have noticed this with it. However as Battletech is one of my favorite franchises (I'm actually in a reread of Blood of Kerensky right now) glaring BS pisses me off (don't get me started on the TV show) even if it weren't due solely to the gamerboys' taste for sexualized women.

    More fraud-exploiting-video-games-for-personal-gain than bogeywoman.

Battletech is one of my favorite franchises as well. It's a cool setting with its own unique flavor of feudal politics and mechanized warfare. It doesn't need any politics, left or right, injected into it.

In fact, an exposed abdomen on a female mechpilot is so incredibly insignificant to the quality of the final product that I question the motivations of anyone who would make an issue of it. Do they want an entertaining combat simulator or an Olive Garden commercial with BattleMechs?

I remember around 1992 there was a company called Virtual World at Hazard Center here in San Diego which basically ran a networked version of Mechwarrior for 12 vs 12 players all in one battle zone. It was fun buy expensive but basically improvements in home PCs and the rise of the internet killed them.

I'm debating dropping the 40 bucks now that it's on steam.

I've got to send my computer (which I bought for this game) for warranty work. Which with all the shit going on right now I haven't been able to do.

My brother is fucking loving it though. Pulled an accidental all nighter. Got a 45m power nap before had to get ready for work.
