Oh, and just for anyone who was curious as to why the new electronic controlled pneumatic systems were better than the old pneumatic breaking I can finally explain that. The older systems would not have controlled the individual breaking on each car through a coordinated program which would have slowed each car using their brakes. The manual control of the pneumatics would have put the most braking pressure on the forward cars because that would be how manual pneumatics works. Electropneumatic systems would have servo controlled pneumatic pistons which could have applied increased pressure on the back of the train without relying on pressure from the front of the train.

The effects would have been two-fold from what I know of pneumatic syatems. First there would be a more even, or even a heavier braking in the rear of the train. Manual Pneumatic systems would rely on pressure from the controller to press out the pistons, meaning the systems work from a controlled point of increased pressure. The electronic upgrade would allow each car to maintain it's own pressure, and therefor it's own breaks, and even be able to put more breaks onto an axle because of a failure of another axle. Even if there was some electronic controls and train by train pressure the nodes of modern electronic control could work together through wireless communications or through a programmed best method for decelleration for an individual car that became disconnected from the physical communications of the others. Saying these breaking systems are the same as ones 100 years ago says they are not working with computer controlled pneumatic breaking.

As for this technology being prohibitively expensive, bullshit. The circuit boards that do this and the pneumatic changes to accomplish it are dirt cheap to design and make. This is something I actually know about. You would not have to change out the old piston systems and valves. Ordering it by bulk for the train industry would be around a dollar a train car for the physical parts. Even the labor to do it would not be that costly. Anyone who could get HVAC certification could do the work. I do not know exactly what the systems look like, but I would imagine you could do an axle upgrade in under 2 hours. I know guys who do similar things and mechanics. This is not really new. These pressurized systems are common along multiple industries where machines are used.

Like imagine having the hindsight of this entire tragedy and still having just a tenth of a normal human brain capacity to be like "yes, less government regulation would have saved lives in this situation."

And then realize that they both have less than a tenth of normal human brain capacity cumulatively.

that would have been an improvement. They were just flailing up there. Pacing was non existent. No one was laughing. Super stiff and uncomfortable.

Norfolk Southern derailment in Springfield, Ohio. A shelter-in-place has been issued. The article also has video of the derailment actually happening.

I live about 25 miles from Springfield. Goddamn.

I think I am going to put any train trips on hold for a while. Not to mention giving some extra room when at the train tracks especially in the long ass train areas of rural nowhere america.

Yeah, shit's falling apart. Derailments happen every day, but in light of the recent national coverage, Norfolk Southern has made it clear they don't give a damn and will not change their behavior. Now, I can avoid train trips, I don't get to take them anyway, but I live a stone's throw from multiple tracks, yards from a switching station, the two towns which are linked by track with us have chemical plants, a steel mill, and hazardous material disposal sites, so we're on borrowed time for sure.

Amtrak should be fine... If they didn't have to share the same tracks these freight trains are derailing on :brood:

There are tracks down here in the duh but I do not think they let the long ass freight trains travel because I am pretty sure the duh limits the length due to population and traffic. It is not like the middle of AL where you get out and start talking and having some beers when you have to wait 30 minutes for the train to pass. That was when the regulations were in place. Maybe the freight travels more inside the shaft in america's dick.

Our trains can last anywhere from 30 seconds to well over an hour. If the train stops, it could be up to 4 hours. Our town is surrounded by tracks on all sides. You cannot leave without crossing tracks at some point.

This is why I worry. This is a train stopped on our tracks. This picture is about 100 feet from my house.

I bet there is an environmental hunting regulation that makes it a felony to shoot non-toxic paintballs that close to your house because they might damage your property or hit you in the eye. Normally hunting regs say firearms cannot be discharged within 500 feet of a residence or road due to the dangers to humans, pets, and property.

It is good to know that you can unsafely move millions of gallons of toxic chemicals on trains that will derail if one axle bearing fails because they are overloaded beyond the safety of physics, and their breaking systems have not been modernized.

Do not worry, I am sure Pete Buttgag is going to get on putting that train car limit back into place one of these days since he can do it without anyone stopping him as transportation secretary. Now that he has been notified of the disasters that could happen and has had weeks to mull it over I am sure it is coming any fucking day. I am sure sleepy joe is knocking on his door once or twice a day asking what the fuck are you doing you lazy fucking asshole. They are probably just delayed counting the money from the railroads.

Here is a pretty clear area where Bernie could have fixed this fucking shit from the start. He would not have needed congress, or anyone else. I am so glad we put sleepy Joe in charge.

Those are. This was just a regular train. I wanted to get a picture as I passed it so you could get an idea of where I lived in relation to the tracks themselves. We get the chemical laden trains about 5 or 6 times a day. On average we get about 13-25 trains a day through here.
