I remember when the printing industry shifted from metal to plastic plates, and for a while the results were horrible. Straight lines got all croggled, colors wound up in places they weren't supposed to be, all kinds of nastiness until the technology matured.
When I self published my first comic in 1976 (The Journal of Popular Culture #1) part of the process for me was I wanted to print the thing myself. So I became an apprentice at "Blue Feather Press" in Santa Fe NM and learned 4 color offset. This was how the cover came out:
