Right? I didn't want him to go either. Supposedly he was asked back, and he declined.

So, I'll kick it off then

The thing I'd LIKE to see is a sort of Tom Baker 2.0 - and the best name anyone has mentioned that I've seen to do that is Stephen Mangan who's in Dirk Gently but apparently really wants the role. I could see it.

But just to tic of the "I want a..." catagories

okay, having seen a little of the Dirk Gently stuff I’ll buy him as Baker 2.0 (which is really what I want) but just to hit the other categories:

if you want a black doctor - Chiwetel Ejiofor

if you want a female - Rebecca Mader (tics the “if you want a ginger” box too) but I’m super down with Haley Atwell too.

if you want a “hunk” - Tom Mison

if you want to “steal the face” of a previously seen character since we’ve established that can happen (this will NEVER happen) - Freema Agyeman

And finally, some on io9 were discussing seeing McGann again. I love the idea of telling some McGann stories, would be great if they did like 3 episode mini-seasons that fit in between the main continuity. But I’d be just fine if they just hand-waved him back into the role on the main show either. If Grover Cleveland can do it...

    So many good options...

(I'm not really that impressed with the older lady suggestions. I love Helen Mirren but I'm not sure that works. I see a lot of suggestions of names that would seem to overwhelm the part like Hugh Laurie (plus, we just did the older guy type) and I saw the name Richard Ayoade which has a nice off-beat look, kinda could see a Bakerish angle there but haven't seen him act so...

Yeah, I wish we'd get a fourth season out of him. He's excellent, but he hasn't been served that well by his first season, script-wise; the second was much better. It would be nice to see more of him, and it would also be nice to see how he does with a new show-runner.

There's a new showrunner? Good ... Moffat's "let's see how insanely convoluted I can make this, gee aren't I clever?" schtick was getting old.

OK. I'll say it. I know Capaldi is an excellent actor, but he never really did it for me as The Doctor. But it's not his fault alone. The whole thing has become so convoluted OR a standalone monster show.

Also, and that's kinda embarassing, I have a very hard time understanding him. I just don't know why because I can understand pretty much anything in spoken English, be it a Scottish mountain dialect or a real life Crocodile Dundee who just escaped the Australian Bush after 28 years. Yet Capaldi gives me a very hard time. I don't know why.

Geez, didn't Capaldi just start like two weeks ago?

Hey, ya want a left-field idea for the Doctor - Craig Ferguson. He's got acting chops, he loves Doctor Who, and it would be epic.

Haley Atwell for a female Doctor, as Nova suggested, I could get behind.

Ferguson was in a Red Dwarf episode, and he dated the actress who played Ms. Miggins on Blackadder, and he had Hatty Haybridge who played female Holly (also Red Dwarf) on his talk show, so him being Dr. Who would complete the BBC triumvirate.

When he's done, he will have been the Doctor for the same amount of time (or longer) than any actor except Tennant, Pertwee, and Tom Baker.

Agreed. The scripts just have not done Capaldi justice.

I'm more curious as to what the next Doctor's personality will be. What do you think? Debonair? Laser-sharp and sure of himself, maybe a little arrogant?

    Well, more arrogant than usual.

    :(

I know Matt Smith would love to return as the Doctor, but I don't see it happening.

His name floated around when Tennant left and when Smith left, so this is the third time his name has been mentioned.

The Doctor has always wanted to be ginger.

Shame about Capaldi, but too many scripts have been pretty shit. Moffat has written some good things, but when you're the boss, you're supposed to send scripts like Kill the Moon (which had the potential to be a great story) back to the writer with hints of how to make it good, rather than take the existing mess and film it.

So, yeah, I like Moffat's work, and hope he returns to write in the future, but he should never, ever, be given the reigns again.

Has anyone been watching Class? It's pretty good, a bit sub-Buffy, but for a British attempt at a US-style series it is good. Hopefully we'll get a season 2, and they'll polish the rough edges off.

The thought of getting behind Hayley Atwell made me a little light-headed. :diacanu:

But, seriously, I'd start watching the damned thing if they brought her on.

Tilda Swinton? Oh, yes, if they could get her...

I heard about this last night. This would be absolutely inspired casting. Swinton is so eclectic that her take on the Doctor would surely be an instant classic.

But I still want Craig Ferguson.

I'd probably never watch it again if they cast Tilda Swinton as the Doctor.
