I doubt she'd do TV as long as it's not something huge, HBO style. Could be interesting, though.

It is what it is. The show has REALLY gone downhill over the last few years as it is. If gimmick casting is what they think will improve it, it needs to go back on the shelf again.

I don't watch the show, really, but why would casting Tilda Swinton be "gimmick" casting?

The show's producers would be amazingly fortunate to get her; she has a serious claim to being the best actress working today.

It's inevitable that there will be a female Doctor, so why not get someone awesome to do it?

It's something they wanted to try since all the way back to the 6th doctor, but they always chickened out at the last minute, and didn't pull the trigger.
    I say, it's about time.
They tried it out with Master/Missy, and fans dug it.

Hey, if it works for the God of Thunder, why not for the Oncoming Storm?

When you have a show where the lead character regenerates into different forms and spends a lot of time interacting with humans, it seems like having that character end up a different gender would open up a very rich vein of potential stories. Lots of fish-out-of-water stuff, plenty of opportunities to play with the character.

And when a show has gone on for fifty years, you need to try some new things and explore some new ground. Is that really a "gimmick"?

Yes, it really is a gimmick.

Well, if gimmick means getting a very well-respected and renowned Academy Award winner to be the lead character of your TV show, yeah, I suppose it's a gimmick.

Isn't every new Doctor a gimmick of some sort?

    "Look, now he's young!"

    "Now he's an action hero!"

    "Now he's Tom Baker!"

    "Now he's young again!"

    "Now he's fucking deranged!"

    "Now he's nice again!"

    "Now he kisses girls!"

"Now he's got a leather jacket and PTSD!"

    "Now he's younger and sexier!"

"Now he's even younger than that!"

    "Now he's old again!"

Is "now he's a she" any worse than the previous twists?

#7 wasn't "nice again" but "bloody devious".

#10 was basically a girl anyway. I'm basing this on a comment from the series itself, and the large contingent of female #10 cosplayers. :async:

Can't say I'm sold on a female Doctor, but that's mostly because it invites lazy writing on a nice big card with an embossed gold RSVP in cursive writing on the back. Lets mentions breasts! They get in the way don't they? Or allude to menstruation, it's not like the last plot to make good use of that was the original Ginger Snaps or anything.

Yeah. Can't say I'm looking forward to seeing Cybermen fleeing because Autie Flow has come to visit :marathon: And you know they'd do something along those lines, mainly as the BBC is still full of public school blokes.

Tilda Swinton would make a good Doctor, I'm just unconvinced the quality of writing would make a female Doctor anything other than cringe inducing.
