Son is sick so can't go to childcare this week. Today I took him to the Adelaide Botanic Gardens at the end of the day for a short outing. Mainly went to see the turtles in the lake, but they're pretty hard to photograph and all the good shots had him front and center.
Nice thing about an all expenses paid vacation is a) I have extra money b) lots of time to troll clearance and discount sites. New watch new shades new shirt. All 50% off or more: Pretty proud of myself. https://www.certina.com/en/watch/ds-7-quartz/c0434104405100
Caramel surveys his domain from the second-story deck. Zoomed in and cropped, so excuse the fuzziness.
Unihertz Jelly Pro. World's smallest smart phone. Bare bones stock Android build, removable battery. $99 or so. Truth be told, it's smaller than I'd like. I wish I could get an Android with a removable battery that is about the size of early iPhones. But I haven't found that, so I go with this thing. On the plus side, it removes any temptation to be sucked into your phone because it's a pain in the ass to use. Modern apps are designed for giant screens so things like Google Maps are practically useless. Texting is frustrating with the tiny keyboard and the other day I wanted to show someone a picture of my dog but the thumbnails were smaller than pinkie nails so I couldn't see them well enough to find the picture I wanted.
So this is Upper Table Rock: It is a ‘volcanic mesa… created by an andesitic lava flow’ according to wiki. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upper_and_Lower_Table_Rock As the name and the above photo suggest the top is very flat. Here’s a panoramic of the Rogue River Valley from the top. Mt. McLaughlin in the background on the left and Lower Table Rock in the background on the right. And here is the King of the Rogue River Valley:
The resort I’m staying at started a beekeeping class. I posted a selfie in the boys group chat. My brother said I look like the poster for a shitty Breaking Bad spinoff and a friend whipped this up:
That's really kewl but, uh, um... ...anyone else seen that movie 'Annihilation'? <suppresses a shudder>
I made a thing! Okay, the bees helped SOME… Joking aside the vet beekeepers who came before me actually did most of the work to take care of the bees that produced this, I just extracted and bottled. Similarly the bees I am taking care of will produce for the next batch.
Nice. It makes me think of these folks. I've been trying to set up a story with them but I haven't been able to get them to return my messages.
If the instructors that volunteer here are any indication they might not be the youngest or most tech savvy of individuals. Might try the local beekeepers Facebook group. Most purchases are group buys where someone is driving* to buy a ‘nuke’ (nuclear hive - a hive starter) and others who want some all pitch in to cover costs. For this group at least that is organized through FB. *Turns out shipping bees through the mail isn’t great. For anyone.
