https://blog.playstation.com/2026/0...-new-games-releasing-on-playstation-consoles/ Knew it was going to happen eventually when they removed the Disc-Drive and made it an add-on...
My son's have always been PS-primary gamers but they're straight up OUT on any console that's digital only. Which I don't blame them. You want to kill your industry? This is how.
Honestly I've been digital only since PS4/XB1 - I honestly don't see what all the fuss is about, when was the last time you put in a disc and it didn't require a massive update anyway?
as I understand it, it's related to the already established precedent that platforms can simply take from you that which you've already paid for with no compensation. Effectively, every time you pay for a game (or movie, etc) you are essentially renting it for ever how long they decide you're allowed to have it
Yes, theoretically they can do that with a disc too since it's effectively just a license to play the game - if they decide to disable it then can anyway - assuming you're connected to the internet anyway.
Disc based games nowadays are really nothing more than a glorified downloader / installer file. Very few disc based games on modern platforms actually have the executable for a playable game on the disc itself.
I prefer the Nintendo Switch / Switch 2 anyway since their games are on an SD card instead of a disc. A bit more durable. But they're definitely heading in the digital direction as well.
