Only if that is a stereotype you have created in your mind. People of all ethnicities can play sports can't they, and if you were worried about him being black, why not make him South Asian, East Asian, Mauri, South American, Arab, Persian, Slavic, Kurd or Polynesian, to name a few? Why does he have a Western European name and not, say, a Russian one? Why can't he be a Vulcan, Andorian, Tellarite, Cardassian, Klingon, Benzite or any other alien race? Why must he be yet another character in your show be a white American male?
Because I'm a white American male. Why should I deliberately populate my stories with people different from me? Good lord El Chup you aren't being at all reasonable
And no they can't. There hasn't been a nonblack Heisman trophy winning running back in American rules football in several decades IIRC.
What is unreasonable about looking to hold to the ethnic, cultural and species diversity that Gene believed in and has been a staple of all of the Trek shows ever since? Just because you are a white American male, why does that mean your characters have to be? If it were me, my characters would be of all kinds, and possibly not even one of them would be a white British male.
If it were you? Fine, write your own damn characters and series ideas. Nobody is stopping you. Good thing if you do then I can come into your workshop thread and troll it like you do mine. And I don't give a rats ass about what Gene Roddenberry believed in. The guy is dead you know.
If you don't care what Gene thought, why call it Star Trek? Why not make up your own idea? Why are you getting to angry and throwing around accusations of trolling when all I'm doing is asking about your characters? What's the point of writing on all this in public if you don't want comment?
Please forgive me for getting testy. In regards to Star Trek, there are plenty of things I like about the franchise. There are things I don't. This should not be difficult to understand. And Gene Roddenberry historically speaking was not even the creator of many of the main features of the original series. Gene Coon created the Klingons and various other mainstays of the original series. Leonard Nimoy created a bunch of features of the Vulcans pretty much on his own. In modern Trek Maurice Hurley created the Borg all on his own while IIRC Michael Piller created the Cardassians and Bajorans.
If you go strictly by the "reality" we've seen in Star Trek, some 600 million people were killed in the last of the great wars. Given that as far as we've seen North America and Europe were not harmed that badly, it stands to reason that Americans and Europeans are the dominant groups of people in the future. And note, my main character the captain in this proposed series isn't from Earth at all. He was born and raised on Mars.
I don't recall any Star Trek episode mentioning a "great war" that all but wiped out the non-caucasian portion of the earths population. You'll need to try harder than that to justify your overt racial bias.
IIRC Paris still has lots of its landmarks including the Eiffel Tower. Brussels is still around. As is San Francisco including the Golden Gate Bridge. New Orleans is intact. At any rate, isn't complaining about the ethnic backgrounds of Star Trek characters a bit unreasonable?
Fine. fine. Still do not see what the big deal is about the ethnic backgrounds of my Star Trek characters being virtually all white people.
Considering the rise of India and China, why are there no Indians and Chinese in your crew, even if you must keep them all human?
In my opinion, India and China "rising" will not be a factor in a few decades anyway. India will be decimated when a future conflict with Pakistan goes nuclear. China is one of those nations that is always the "next big thing" but never quite gets there. As an expert on China said in Foreign Policy magazine "China is the next great power. And always is"
#62) Tower must face an impending Borg attack without the might of the Enterprise or its talented crew. Stranded at an obscure Starbase and left to his own devices, Tower takes command of a small Sentinel class scout/science vessel with barely half its assigned crew aboard.
#63) Carson faces a mutiny onboard the Enterprise after executing two black crewmen for insubordination. The remaining black crewmen (working as cooks in the ships kitchen and as redshirts) take control of three decks of the ship. Tower releases toxic uridium radiation into the decks killing the crewmembers, and thenceforth rules that all officers on the ship should be of pure white stock and swear an oath of personal allegiance to him.
#64) Tower discovers that his crew members make faces at him behind his back. Tower is adamant that he be the only one allowed to make faces at his crew and superiors, and only under Red Alert. When the crew continues to do so, he files several formal reports and complaints to Starfleet Headquarters. When he is informed that nothing can be done or will be done, he responds by filing even more reports and complaints. After being further informed that he is discontinue filing such reports, he responds with a series of ill informed and outlandish demands, and insinuates personal threats against his crew and superiors. He is promptly placed on suspension once again, despite his belief that he is a superior officer and member of Starfleet.
#63. The Borg create an android version of Captain Tower with all of his memories and abilities as a means of defeating their deadliest enemy. Unfortunately for all concerned android Tower has its own ideas about who should rule and who should not.
#64 Captian Tower lies in a coma following severe injuries inflicted by android Tower. The crew allies itself with Captain Fraser of the U.S.S. Discovery and famous renegade Star Fleet officer Marsden and his Borg Transwarp Ship (Descent, TNG).
#65 A partially recovered Captain Tower returns to lead the allied fleet against android Tower but everyone is unaware that the android has joined forces with the deadliest Borg ship of all time, Leviathan. #66 Leviathan and its escorts at the direction of android Tower wrecks two thirds of the allied fleet. Android Tower subsequently uses the power of Leviathan to assimilate the advanced technology of the Cytherians, First Federation and half a dozen other advanced races. #67 With the Federation powerless to prevent it, the Borg construct a massive high tech base and shipyard at Ross 248. #68 With no possible way to take on android Tower and its Borg allies directly, Goldstein and Stafford come up with a bizarre plan using Captain Towers dead wife to draw out android Tower. Meanwhile Soljenov discovers that a bizarre artifact similar to the Guardian of Forever might be the key to the Borg's creation of android Tower. #69 As the massive Borg fleet nears completion Goldstein and Stafford's plan is implemented. Captain Tower successfully seizes control of the newly constructed Borg fleet. #70 Captain Tower uses his control of the new Borg fleet to destroy Leviathan. He then "kills" android Tower following a brief, violent confrontation. But the victory severely taxes Tower who has not recovered fully from his earlier injuries and he spirals downward to near death yet again.
