I first saw him in Henry & June (which features a naked Uma Thurman and Kevin Spacey), where he played the writer Henry Miller. I next saw him in All the Right Stuff, both films were done by the same director, with the Right Stuff having been done first. There's a scene of him in Right Stuff, sitting in a bar, with rolls of dimes, talking about how he was going to make money off of them by taking them to space with him, and then selling them when he got back to Earth. I watched that scene and instantly realized why Philip Kaufman cast him to be Henry Miller. Hell, Kaufman probably got the idea to make the movie after shooting that scene (Kaufman knew Miller well).

Oh, so I won't go into the details about this scene from the film, then.

I'm sad that he passed, he was a favorite.

But we are all getting old, and he had a full life - he died at age 79.

His last role was 7 years ago, in True Detective. But he was 72 then.

The first thing I really remember him in was an HBO show about a detective in a world of magic, Cast a Deadly Spell.

Oh, and he named his first kid Django. Django Ward is still out there, kicking.

Circle of life and all that.

TIL that I was wrong, and that the first time I saw him was in this movie.
