I do that in retrospect, yes. I don't do it in real time, though I suppose knowing ahead of time that it's a time travel episode, I might.

Hey , something just occurred to me. Why wasn't SAAVIK ever on TNG &/or DS9? I'm pretty certain that she would & should still be alive in the 24th Century when those Star Trek series took place.

    After all , she's a VULCAN!

They would have had to pay Nick Meyer as her creator, and there was complicated butt-hurt between the movie and show people passed down from Gene.

Aaaactually....since that movie vs TV shit is cleared up now (SNW just had Sybok) maybe we could have her on SNW.
According to the novels, Sarek and Amanda adopted her, so she's actually Michael Burnham 2: Electric Boogaloo.
Kirstie Alley was 30 when she played Saavik on TWOK.
TWOK is 15 years after "Space Seed".
"Space Seed" is season 1, and everything after "Where No Man Has Gone Before" is actually year 2 of the mission.
So, WNMHGB de-ages Saavik down to 14.
And SNW is 6 years before that, de-aging her to 8.
Just about exactly the age she's rescued from the failed colony, and adopted by Sarek and Amanda.
    Bada-bing.

Neither actress was willing to come back for Undiscovered Country, and Alley wasn't even willing to walk over from the Cheers set with Kelsey Grammar so Saavik could be the first officer of the Bozeman.

With good reason; they heel-turned her into doing the shit Valeris did.

Yeah, but Robin Curtis didn't exactly have a great acting career beyond Saavik, you think she'd be jumping at the chance for another movie paycheque.

With Alley the impression I got was that she considered herself above genre stuff after her career took off, much like Ashley Judd.

Which would have had far more emotional impact if they had stuck with Saavik.

They had to jerry-rig the script to shoehorn Valeris in when none of the actresses would come back for Saavik. Might have been a lot more interesting backstory/character moments if the original plan had stuck.

I mean, they could have cast Saavik #3.

    We're on Spock 3, Kirk 3, Uhura 3, and Pike 3.

Y'know... at that point we'd never had multiple appearances from a female Vulcan other than Saavik, so they could have made it canon that Vulcan women change drastically in appearance and voice as they age. Maybe they molt like lizards or something. :chris:

If I remember right, Roddenberry said "you can't make Saavik a traitor, she's a beloved character," and Nick Meyer said "I created Saavik, so fuck off." But then when they realized they'd be looking at moving onto a third actress, Meyer and Nimoy agreed that would be ridiculous, and they moved on.

(Did Roddenberry's opposition make it easier for Meyer and Nimoy to decide to move on, maybe thinking "well, this will also get the old man off our backs?" Who knows.)

Obviously Tora Ziyal would like a word. But then, hiding a change in actresses is probably easier when you have all that Cardassian makeup. Saying "Oh yeah, Kirstie Alley and Robin Curtis and Kim Catrall are totally all the same person!" without anything more than slanted eyebrows and pointed ears to mask their human appearances would have been another matter.

In any rate, I kind of like that Saavik got to remain a good guy and her future remains a mystery.

Ah yeah, what a great career decision that was, so she could do *checks notes* talking baby films and a series about how fat she was that got cancelled after one season. Do you know how hard it was to get cancelled on HBO in the 2000s, pre-Sopranos?

Such a great decision to snub Trek.

Cheers is arguably one of the greatest American sitcoms, but she came in late and she was no Diane Chambers.

Alley probably could have milked the Trek cow for a lot longer and a lot more money if she had been smarter about her career choices.

    "The Galileo Seven".

Hey! A second black girl on the bridge!
She's two seats over from Uhura, in a blue outfit, and with a pretzel hairdo like Leia in ESB!

Some fanficcer needs to make up who she was.

Y'know, it occurs to me, now that we know in hindsight that Seven was going to become captain of the Enterprise-G, it would seem...that Janeway's role in the Trek universe is to train future Enterprise captains.
So....maybe Prodigy ends with Dal becoming captain of the Enterprise-H.
