I actually really like that theory, it's totally in character with who he was at that point too.

You just know that guy has a fuckton of fun with his own dad.

I'm thinking that the reason there are so many limb severing incidents occur, is that the Empire and Jedi use it to supplement food supplies. Kind of like the Star Wars version of Soylent Green. If you sever a limb the person can still be productive and still have enough limbs for future use.

Or Lucas has real guilt about the common activity of a typical teenage boy.
