I don't think so. Someone could have a lot of posts or been here a long time but not be perceived as a big contributor; conversely, someone could be a relative newb and, if they've made a big splash, could rightly qualify.

Basing it on who the membership thinks deserves it is the best and fairest way, I think.

Simply spamming up Wordforge for years and years is not an "achievement". It's just a pastime.

For that matter, the Techman award isn't really based on what a person does on Wordforge. It's based on those who have really done something worthwhile with their life. Which, IMO, is as it should be.

I disagree. We have no idea what alot of the people around here do with their real life. How can we judge a "best"? Who are we to judge someone else's real life anyway? And given that most people on the internet lie about their real life anyway, who are we to judge it with any accuracy?
