The dark horses (no pun intended) in this race are Somalia or maybe Zimbabwe. They might be having some rough times now, but they have nowhere else to go but "up" at this point in their history! That aside, maybe Kyrgystan...they might sneak in under the radar as the next #1 superpower.

They don't have the economy to be a super power. Putin recently tried to assassinate the head of state in Montenegro to prevent them joining NATO so Putin is a true threat because he is a dictator without any moral compass. Even with the bumblings of Trump America looks like a much better partner to most countries.
Merkel is a disaster who will cause her country to suffer decades of Islamic terrorist attacks while the women get raped. That is not moral leadership, that is the absence of it.
Yeah. Germany has zero moral leadership. There are a pile of corpses between North Africa, the Middle East and the EU to attest to that, along with an EU that's being garotted by German intransigence, and none of that balanced with any international outlook. I can't honestly think of a single nation that currently has any global moral leadership, there's been a reliance on the US generally doing more right than wrong and everyone betting on that remaining the case rather than shouldering any burden themselves. The US, under Trump, has absolved itself of that responsibility and now nations are looking at each other and deeply hoping this is a blip on the US's part rather than act like an adult. France and the UK have, mostly, acted as junior partners with the US on this, but neither seem too keen on taking the lead role.

And in the process almost destroyed the EU's right of free movement, enriched a number of gangs, fed an awful lot of fish and provided the right with the 'refugee===terrorist' meme on a shiny silver platter.
