A movie about a comet hitting the Earth that reflects the attitudes many have about global warming and the pandemic.

So we had Nazis from the dark side of the moon for Sarah Palin's presidency, and now we have a meteor to destroy us for MTG's presidency.

We just cannot get a break if a republican woman is elected president.

Who is playing @Lanzman and his comet atractor? Oh, and congrats on it's final completion.

It is well done, but it is not as over the top as idiocracy which makes it sort of depressing. It is done more like office space but has no up side.

I thought it was great. JLaw looked good as just a regular person. The one thing I just couldn't understand, the snacks were free and he charged them anyway.

It just made me sad. There were some funny moments yeah (the aforementioned snacks thing because we *do* focus on the tiny shit the most), but the ending was just... painful, and I don't mean in a cinematic way that was fine, I mean in an emotional way because, regarding global climate change (and COVID), the optimist in me says there is still some time but we have to make fundamental shifts in how our society works, the pessimist in me, though, is aware that while we still have some time, we have to make fundamental shifts in how our society works. There is too much noise and static, churned up by people with interests in maintaining the status quo. Individuals can only do so much without collective will to focus and address these problems at the source.

That is the thing about these sorts of parodies. It is not funny. It is frustrating and sad. This really did not go over the top like an idiocracy. I actually think it was understated in some places. When people finally looked up and saw the comet, they actually started to believe their eyes. There are people dying of COVID and people who have had their lives destroyed by insane weather they have never seen before who still insist nothing is going on. Jennifer Lawrence's character would have been put in jail to silence her. She would not have been released with some non-disclosure agreement.

We are not these divine created creatures of ethics, morals, love, and compassion. We are animals. Some small number of us happen to be nice ones. The rest of us are stupid, sadistic, or both. The biggest lie we have been fed is that we come from this noble and good stock and history.

Left or right, just know that corporations and the like don’t actually give a shit about anyones feelings or any of your agenda. The writers might, and that’s a big might, but ultimately it comes down to money. Big props for at least acknowledging your plight, but in the end, just know it’s all about profit. I know you know that @Amaris , but don’t sucker yourself into thinking they actually care. They don’t.

I turned it off after they attempted to advise the president.

For a dark comedy, it just wasn't fun to watch.

Honestly? I disagree. I think most humans are good, and I think we naturally work together when the chips are down, but I also believe humans have some severe flaws: for example, we're easily lead by charismatic people. You get a good hearted person, that's not an issue, but you get a self-interested asshole, and now we have a problem because people will emulate that because they think it will help them survive. For millions of years, we've worked together as a species, it's why we dominate the planet with numbers, and with our influence (good and bad). I believe we have been conditioned as we are now, and that removing that conditioning takes time because humans also tend to look for shortcuts to solutions because, like most creatures, our bodies only want to expend energy when necessary because our giant brains require so much of it. "What's the fastest way to getting this solved so I can go back to eating/fucking/sleeping?" is how our lizard and mammalian brains work.

We can do better, and we can be better. We have been better. We didn't get here by accident (not all of the time anyway). We have been conditioned to go it alone, when we really need to come together and assert what we know is right and true. The sticky wicket? Deciding on what's right and true based on evidence rather than on charismatic leadership.

Yeah, it's why we call it "rainbow capitalism." I do believe there are people on staff who are very much invested in making sure vulnerable folks are seen, but at the end of the day, it's suits who make the decision based on how profitable it will be.

There is only one joke that was actually a good laugh. The movie is a dark comedy crossed with requiem for a dream. It just keeps getting worse.

Anyway, for the joke you missed:

In 1977, CBS Radio Mystery Theater did an episode with a similar theme. In it, scientists are angry with the mayor of an unnamed city in California because he refuses to evacuate the city ahead of the planetary alignment since the scientists are only about 90% certain that the alignment will cause a devastating earthquake. (Doesn't want to cause a panic and all that.) Days before the alignment happens, the city is threatened by a supervillain and had the mayor listened to the scientists, the supervillain's plot would have been foiled. Coincidentally enough (I was listening to the program tonight) one of the final ads is for "The Betty White Show."

    Yep.

I loved the movie (apart from thinking it actually detracted from the point when it got too SciFi nearing the end) but most of the criticism of it seems to be coming from the groups lapooned in it, or conservatives that don't believe climate change is happening and feel like it was attacking them. But scenes like the concert are equally scathing of attention focused advocates.

Saw this, it was ok - I enjoyed the performances more than the movie itself. Cate Blanchett and Meryl Streep were just awesome

    Aw man, Wag the Dog.

Remember when Clinton had the opportunity to catch or kill OBL shortly before the 2000 election, but dropped the ball because he worried he'd be accused by the Republicans and the press of Wagging the Dog for Gore?

Imagine how much better the world might be if that smug stupid movie had never been made. :jayzus:

The last hour of this movie made me weep. It's a great movie, and a great allegory for all of the ignorant bullshit the US has been having to deal with. But it just left me feeling so sad and frustrated.

The scene where the MAGA-heads Don't-Look-Uppers actually look up at the president's rally and realize they're doomed was just a mirror image of all the Trumpers, anti-maskers, anti-vaxxers, and climate change deniers who have all realized that it is too late. These idiots have doomed a lot of people, and they are being treated as having equally valid opinions by people like @Uncle Albert, @Federal Farmer, and @Paladin, all to humanity's detriment.
