*Sigh* I just want to see a TOS prequel.

    Just once, man. Just once.

Enterprise just about got there, but not until Manny Coto took over in its last season.

But I want to know: What did Earth face between Enterprise and TOS that made them armor their ships to high hell?

(Because based on the appearance of ENT ships and TOS ships, the only logical explanation for the visual difference is thick-ass armor and hardcore-"ruggedized" portable tech.)

So why'd they do that? How did they get from TMP-ish ships to TOS ships, where nothing glows like a christmas tree as if to say, "Photon radiation marks the spot! Shoot here!"

I'd love to see that played out.

I didn't forget. I wanna see it. I wanna see them re-tooling a Star Trek: Enterprise-ish looking Constitution to have thick-ass armor, so that at the end, when it launches, what we see is a TOS Constitution-class ship that just whoops the piss out of the Romulans.

And people have even done up some artwork to show what an NX-looking Constitution class would look like:

That's actually kind of awesome. To see it get refit from that to the TOS Constitution would only amplify the badass factor.

My favorite TOS prequel take is probably Diane Carey's "Final Frontier."

Which, interestingly, has a British-accented security officer named Reed, though I think he's from the West Indies.

As I have said before, so i say again (admittedly in this a different context) -

There is room in the Trek verse for an animated series that' serious. Something that has the potential to re-define that genre. Not the clunky "Clone Wars" type of animation, but still that type of situation where you "expand the universe" via an animated series.

If they don't want to over-expose of Kirk's crew, then fine, Let's do the Romulan Wars. Create a whole new crew, while throwing in some continuity porn, put them on an "Excelsior" or an "Excalibur" or whatever and use CGI animation to get as close as the budget will allow to phtorealism (hell, the level of animation seen in, say, Arkham City, would do nicely) and rock out.

Take a chance and do something creative.

But hey, who am i kidding, it's Paramount.

Personally, I'd find something set in the pos-TUC "Lost Era" to be more interesting to see on screen than anything set pre-TOS. An Excelsior-based series sounds somewhat interesting, although it could just as easily be set on any random ship, or even the Enterprise-B. I like the idea of some random Constitution class ship, though, if only because I happen to like the design, and because the thought of a series taking place on an older ship that isn't top of the line but has its own history has a certain appeal to me.

Hey, why was this moved? I might've wanted to get RAWR in this thread! Or provoke someone else to get RAWR in this thread, I'm sort of getting bored with being the only one doing the heavy outrage lifting.

That, madam, is executive thinking. Just wish it was studio executive thinking.

Well, start building up your resume, and industry connections, and rise up into a Trek showrunner.

Step 1, stop dicking around on WF.

For some reason, I think that Malcolm Reed's family had settled down in the West Indies rather than Britain. Maybe I'll watch "Silent Enemy" again. I think that was the episode where the crew was trying to contact Reed's mom and pop trying to figure out a birthday surprise for Reed.
