Okay, I'll be the kid from "Emperor's New Clothes". It's almost exactly beat for beat "Close Encounters".
You've got the messages from space, you've got the people making contact being gaslit, you've got government goons chasing the leads around, you've got crop circles instead of the mashed potato mountain. The details are shifted slightly, but the skeleton is the same.
I disagree, and you can't leap to those kind of conclusions based on a trailer. Based on those very broad strokes, you could effectively say that any alien contact film is basically a riff on Close Encounters.
I do see hints that there may be a twist that the government is faking it. Like, what's the deal with the guy with the VR puppteering gear?
The star of the movie calls it " a spiritual sequel to Close Encounters". https://www.darkhorizons.com/disclosure-day-stirs-close-encounters-talk/ *Whips out saxophone and sings "I still believe"*
I wish this pile of crap would hit theaters so I can just read the wikipedia plot summary and move on.
