I'm alright with a bit more violence in my Trek, as long as it's handled well, and you can't say that Trek has never had it's fair share of sex, either. I'm reserving judgement until I see what they make of it.

    And lesbian violence.

The lesbian filling-out-tax-returns was surprisingly gripping too.

Ironic isn't it that people are talking about being fine with "more violence" in new Star Trek.

Yet my interest in the occasional space battle is repeatedly mocked and derided.....

    Why?

Star Trek has had to hold back on violence, because the shows were on TV before niche shows became popular, or shows produced by the AMC, HBO, etc.. So the violence had to be curtailed, to fit the standards of the network it was on. What people are fine with is the violence enhancing the reality of the show. And example could be where Hank is shot and killed on Breaking Bad, there was tension and drama in the scene. The type that would most likely need to be edited for over the air networks, which would have not worked in the context of the story.

What you want is explosions and violence just to have it, because "It's Cool", without enhancing the story.

It's not 'occasional' - for either reasons of trolling or fetish, you can barely go five posts in a Trek thread without bringing it up.

And nobody has a problem with space battles so long as they're linked to plot. If you write a story, and it lends itself to a battle, great - go for it. If you start off with wanting a battle and writing a story around that, well, then you've got the Transformers movies.

And this is why they just need to fully reboot the franchise. No half-way house like JJTrek.

TOS was the future as seen from the 1960's. Half a century has passed, so you either keep moving the timeframe forward so you can make the future look futuristic to the modern timeframe, reboot for the same reason, or accept that you're making problems for yourself.

Even the TNG era, where people passed around what now looks like iPads, looks dated. Didn't they have WhatsApp in the 24th Century? Damn you Zuckerberg! Damn you!

Keep the plot device tech that we're unlikely to crack in the near future (transporters, warp drive) and just update the show. You've already got plots to cherry pick and expand upon - Space Seed re-imagined as a season long arc, or For the Earth is Hollow to give McCoy time to really fall in love.

Discovery is likely to piss off the fans, but serving them would make the series look old. nuBSG got away with it as the Galactica was expressly old tech, Trek isn't going to do that.

I don't want to rehash old episodes. If they can't come up with something original, then they should leave it alone. Personally I had an idea where the next series is set fifty years after Nemesis and the new ship travels through a man made wormhole to another galaxy. You don't need references or call backs to the past.

TOS rehashed the basic concepts of some of it's own episodes, TNG rehashed a number of TOS plots (recycling way before it was cool!)

What I'm on about is if you rebooted TOS, you could take the basics and expand upon them, rather than Naked Time/Naked Now. If you want to make Trek edgy, you've got source material galore from TOS.

Think of Errand of Mercy expanded - the Federation and Klingon Empire on a knife-edge, skirmishes are rampant. War drums are being banged on both sides, and we see both sides battling to choose peace or war internally, and those seeking peace losing, the hawks ascendant. The series arc, we see Kirk and Kor, trapped by their sides shortsightedness, each recognising the worthiness in the other yet barrelling towards a conflict that will devastate both sides, both desperate to find a way out only to find avenues closed, allies removed and orders increasingly difficult to wriggle from under. Kirk under pressure from an Admiral wishing to remove him, Kor besieged by officers waiting to assassinate him and take his place, until the Organians provide a way out if only they can find it in themselves to trust one another and listen to their better angels.

Or the Enterprise Incident - the crew trapped behind enemy lines, a Romulan cloaking device only able to function on a Federation ship by Scotty's genius and always in danger of failing and needing frequent changes. Think of the tension in NuBSGs first few episodes as they're on the run from the Cylons, only it's Kirk and co hiding from the Romulans, desperately trying to get back across a heavily mined and fortified Neutral Zone - not to bring back the cloaking device, but the Romulans own method if detecting cloaked vessels at close range, as there are Romulan ships heading for a first strike against Federation targets, and the clock is ticking.

No, then the Borg show up.

A couple will have survived from 'Regeneration' and set up shop just where Discovery will be.

But it's sexy, so they'll have crotchless catsuits.

My ship was called Odyssey as well, but it was to be smaller, purely for scientific and exploration purposes. It would have a retro type look because that's the trend of design at the time. This journey would be like the Apollo missions , Starfleet wouldn't really know what they're up against and would kind of have to make it up as they go. This part of the reason for the retro design. As a matter of fact, the shuttle would be called Apollo and would look like a capsule, kind of. There would be no families.

Imagine something similar to the Phoenix from First Contact, but shorter and the nacelles would attach like a typical runabout. The dish would extend from the nose cone and a torpedo launchers like the Reliant. The whole thing would be cylidrical. Unfortunately I'm not that good of an artist, so it's hard to convey. It's basically meant to look like Apollo, but with warp nacelles.

I came up with the story years ago. I have an outline for the first episode, but I don't know the first thing about writing fan fiction or anything, so I shelved it. Some of my ideas were kind of similar to how Interstellar turned out. It's like Christopher Nolan read my mind.:calli:

I've been watching The Good Fight on CBS all access, and it's clear from the first episode that they are no longer hindered by the Network censors. The show is so good it could air on HBO or Netflix, and the language is decidedly more adult and realistic. So I'm hoping the new Star Trek will have more freedom to take risks in terms of language, violence, or sensitive subjects. And as with all streaming services, CBS All Access will not give a shit about demographics, they only want viewers. Keeping my fingers crossed that they don't fuck it up and actually give us something interesting to watch.

Yeah, but what swears would they use in the Trek universe?

So far, we've heard Data say "oh, shit!, and NuKirk say "bullshit".

And of course, the Klingons have "patak".
(I know that's gotta be spelled wrong, but you know the damned word)

Will they make up some bullshit like NuBSG, or will they stick to Shit, Piss, Fuck, Cunt, Cocksucker, Motherfucker, and Tits?

I think they should leave it to us to assume that our swears are being universal translated from whatever sci-fi bullshit they're saying in their universe.

Do I have to go in to detail about what makes a good space battle to me? Does anyone here really want to hear that?
