I dunno, the gist I got from how the holodeck works, is that unless the safety program says "don't do that" the computer's self-Google is way too thorough, and it builds perfect guns from blueprints in the library computer. How else to explain why they're lethal without the safeties?

I always thought of the safeties as an extra predictive step in the holodeck physics simulations. In that sort of situation if you're gonna want to be able to quickly turn the safeties back on or pause the simulation (as we saw with the bullets frozen in air) then it's far better for them to be simulated than real.

Then you have situations like the one in First Contact, where the guns were implied to only work against the Borg because they were real guns.

I suspect it's a combination. Real replicated bullets, but they are being moved around by the forcefields that apply force to everything in the holodeck.

Also why the bullets aren't spent, they were just moved as one piece out of the barrel of the gun. :async:

I really liked this episode. We got character developement for Rutherford and Boimler's meltdown was hilarious. I also liked that the Delta Flyer was actually featured in this episode and not just a quick reference. The other ship had a TOS like computer design.

If you're a Niner, you're going to love the fuck out of today's episode. It's just a straight up injection of nostalgia for DS9 fans. I loved it.

That was 30 minutes of pure, unadulterated fanwank, and I loved it.

    Running notes:

    - The way the Cerritos crew are applying those LCARS-style labels to the cargo containers. Interesting.
    - DS9 looks gorgeous.
    - Quark’s is a franchise!
    - Rutherford’s three PADDs with maps -- feels like an homage to all the times we saw Sisko juggling a stack of PADDs, one PADD per document.
    - Nana Visitor!
    - Armin Shimerman!
    - Nice nod to the awkward handwaves the DS9 writers had to engage in to make Quark's-related stories work with the whole "the Federation doesn't have money" thing.
    - Quark’s XPress.
    - "Fortune Favors the Bold"
    - Morn!
    - What is that bottle that Mariner pours from at Jennifer’s friends' salon? I know the shape is from something. It's not kanar, but I can't remember what it is.
    - Rutherford plays Nog in holodeck simulations. Is this the first episode where Rutherford is a bigger dork than Boimler?
    - “This is just a big misunderstanding!”
    - I had totally forgotten about the Quark’s-head-on-Kira’s-body thing.

The bottle is from TOS. It’s been seen quite a bit. Scotty uses it to pour saurian brandy. I don’t know the liquid.

Prophets-DAMN that was a good episode.

I wasn't sure I was watching DS9 or Lower Decks!

Boimler, Tendi, and Rutherford all shipping Jennifer and Mariner

So, we've got our TNG, DS9, and VOY guest stars.
They have to get ENT people on there to complete the set.
It would pretty much have to be Riker's holo-program.
"Waahhh! Me no like ENT! :weep:".
It's Lower Decks, they'd fix it. Have some fucking faith.

That last scene with Quark quickly chewing up the data chip while Kira chased him around the bar was comedy gold. He was like a cat when they're caught with something they shouldn't be eating.

    Faith of the heart?

Why wouldn't Rutherford play Nog on the holosuite? Dude's a war hero in the Engineering branch! Probably a Lt. Commander by now, maybe XO of a starship...

The Karemma have some pretty advanced hacking tech if it can shut down not only all of DS9 but also any starships docked with it (which don't use the same tech - though DS9 has been made largely compatible with Starfleet protocols).

UA - according to the credits, Fred Tatasciore voiced the trade minister, but a lot of folks though he sounded like John Lithgow.

Introduced as such in PIC but we've also seen one of the franchises in LDS before (in case anyone says "but PIC is 30 years on!")

It's Fallout 4, they barely look human.

You might manage Dayton if you tweak it enough. But you'd need an amputee mod.

Mike McMahon says he's working on how to bring ENT in.

Also, he co-wrote the SNW crossover episode.

Considering Archer's historical importance, it wouldn't be weird at all for one of the characters to run a holodeck simulation of him.

Also, I'm glad the crossover will involve the voice actors doing live-action, and I really hope Jack Quaid dyes his hair purple for the occasion.

Huh. This week's episode is definitely.... different.

It's easily my least favorite of the series but maaaaaaybe might be saved in a future story.

Still, if this ends up being the worst episode of Lower Decks down the road, at least it had Jeffery Combs cameo for a minute.
