Vulcans wear giant flashy robes instead of generic body coverings. Vulcans have traditional haircuts. Vulcans have elaborate mating rituals with chimes and ritual combat. Vulcans have traditional expressions like "peace and long life" and "live long and prosper" despite such expressions having no quantifiable effect on the longevity of the recipient. Vulcans are not a bunch of purely logical robots. They can be flashy as they like, and they often are.
Well, you already undercut your own point by admitting the priority is to be entertaining. But even then, how do you know? We've rarely, if ever, seen Vulcans engage in prolonged physical combat.
Look at how flashy modern Christianity is compared to Jesus and the apostles basically being hobos living off handouts. Mission creep sinks into every social movement.
I mean... Vulcans are a deeply emotional species, logic is basically them using cognitive behavior therapy at a societal level to keep from killing each other. Their oldest customs and traditions would predate Surak and naturally be illogical and dramatic.

Vulcan has higher gravity than Earth. Spock was all sorts of fucked up in Amok Time. Spock was fighting his best friend and captain and not some rando he'd have no reason to hold back against. Pon farr ritual combat held at an official site probably has more rules surrounding it, hence the silly weapons. You're trying to hard to be illogical here.

I'm not saying he's playing the part poorly. I'm just saying that if one hopes for the eventual Kirk-as-Captain series (as I do) the age will eventually get him. UNLESS they do the smart thing and jump over TOS and set the next series in the post-V'ger gap...that would help the age problem a lot. Oh, and the eyebrows - I can't not see those eyebrows. Otherwise the looks don't bother me at all.
Agreed! I mean it when I say I wouldn't mind seeing TOS from a fresher perspective, but it would be so much better, I think, if they tackled, say, the Lost Years, the ones between TOS and TMP, or maybe do the movie years. I've been wanting to see the movie years for... years.
if SNW ends, in universe, in 2264 and the new show begins in 2273-74, then Wesley's Kirk would be around 40 and maybe he'll be actually more like 50 but "playing younger" in that 40-60 range is a lot easier. It would totally work - AND be a more interesting show.
Not enough room between TOS and TMP, especially since they have effectively affirmed TAS as canon. I think they said in TMP that the refit had kept Enterprise in drydock for 2 years or more? OTOH, there's basically a decade between TMP and TWOK Might be an interesting time for some flashbacks though where appropriate to the plot.
Wouldn't that add up? 2 seasons of the first five year mission (TOS 70 and 71) a second five years (TOS 72-77) 2 years in drydock (78 and 79) TMP (Dec '79)
10 years passed in our time, but only 2 in show time. Then there's the 10 year jump from TMP to TWOK to compensate.
There's 15 years between Space Seed and TWOK. Space Seed was season 1 of TOS. Then there's the whole, "Eh, she's an old ship, so we're gonna just scrap her" thing in TSFS. Which, if you believe what the novelization of TMP said, the Enterprise was basically the best ship of the Federation, in terms of accomplishments. (At least while Kirk was at the helm.) You'd think that they'd want to put it in a museum if they weren't fully going to repair the ship, not break her up for scrap. I mean, it's not like she's a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier that is nearly impossible to safely decommission because of how the reactor is made.
four, according to MA. TMP is 2274, the TOS 5 year mission was 2265-70 but for the sake of a "phase 2"series, I can live with fudging TMP's time frame.

There are a lot of things they could do. A concurrent-with-TOS show. A post-TMP show. Or even a new series of films (either streaming or theatrical). They could also, eventually, maybe do a show or film set between ST5 and ST6 set on the Enterprise-A. However! I'm still of the opinion that things are that are best left to limited series or films. Ongoing series, I strongly believe, should be set post-Berman era. (Or now post-Picard, I guess).

As a refresher.. 1. TOS 2. TNG 3. DS9 4. VOY 5. ENT 6. DISCO 7. PIC 8. LD 9. PROD 10. SNW 11. SFA 12. ??? That DISCO, PIC, LD hump gets me tangled sometimes too. Didn't help that the further seasons were released as peacemeal as thrown glitter.
Keep up. We're talking about a long-standing character being inconsistently written because modern writers think they know better.
