It was established back on Voyager that Seven of Nine is the name she prefers, she's actually compromising by allowing people to just call her Seven. :async:

But none of that matters, because the procedure they describe is shoving the human meat-brain into the android body.[/quote]

They floated the possibility of doing that for Uhura IIRC. But we don't know if they could in fact do that. I take it from the fact that the procedure is never heard of again, let alone is not commonplace, that it would not have longterm worked.

Also, the meat-brain would (presumably) eventually degrade and die.

If you buy that Star Trek exists in a universe where humanity has the technology to completely disassemble your atoms, send you thousands of kilometres away and then reassemble them in a matter of seconds, pretty much everything else is pretty fucking moot.

Always thought that taken to its logical conclusion, the transporter itself was basically immortality, at a minimum. If you save the pattern from your first adult transport, then when you get sort of creaky why couldn't you just use that pattern to reset back to 20 or whatever? While only a small advance in technology you should be able to use it to combine your mental state with pretty much any physical pattern, even if it's not from your own transporter history.

Like, hey, Fleet Captain Pike doesn't have to STAY in the chair - use the transporter to reconstitute a pre-injury body

I understand that the producers have chosen an antifa transsexual woman with pink hair as the new computer voice.

    Just for you.

I thought Majel Barrett recorded a lot of stuff for the express purpose of being the voice of the computer indefinitely?

If she did, they haven't been using it for either of the animated series or SNW. All three shows have different VAs. Which does lead me to wonder what the fucking point of the article is.

Yep, she banked all that stuff for JJ Trek.
    Rod Roddenberry knew about it.
    You'd think he'd remind Kurtzman.

Hell, it's a computer voice, so chucking samples of Majel as the computer into an AI would likely be indistinguishable from her actually recording the lines. I'm not sure where the line is in terms of copyright when it comes to audio deepfakes of the dead.

Not according to the article posted by @Tuckerfan. There are claims that she did, but nothing has ever surfaced so it's unfortunately either a rumour or she didn't really "bank" all that much stuff.

    From the article:

"While fans held some hope that the nostalgia-heavy bow out for the season would’ve found some way to include Barret’s voice (oft mentioned were promises for a voice bank of Barrett’s recordings made in the wake of her death, but there’s been little advance on that in the years since)"

EDIT: And a bit more googling finds the tweet that started the rumour:

    https://twitter.com/roddenberry/status/772493204121944066

"Majel's voice is recorded phonetically" could mean anything. I'm thinking there's actually no such thing as a "bank" of recordings.

I bet it’s Patrick Stewart then. They’ll make a TOS like joke at the end with some cutesy music and then fade to black, roll credits.

The copyright issue is probably somewhat murky but not unresolveable. The main issue would be if a family member contested the use of it.

AIs certainly can mimic her voice. There’s bots that can duplicate a voice after hearing only three seconds of it. Not so perfect that you can’t tell, but far closer than the computer voice on TOS or even TNG.

From a nostalgia standpoint, I get wanting to hear her always as the computer voice, and from and in-universe it does make sense. But it also makes sense to have different voices.

After all, each ship is slightly different because of choices made by the captain (no holographic displays on Enterprise because Pike doesn’t like them), so why not different voices for different ships?

Also, if each program has a different voice, then you can tell if you’re talking to the holodeck program or the main computer. That way you don’t have to worry that you’ve told the main computer to fire phasers when you thought that you were talking to the holodeck.

honestly, that 60s style "mechanical" inflection for computer voices is pretty cringe.

given that "sexy sally" already existed in 1965 it's some pretty shitty extrapolation on the part of the sound designers of TOS (many, I'd presume, who should've known better)

My top three characters who should be killed (permanently), in order of my preference:

    1. Data/Lore/B4 and any other character that overrated "fan-favourite" actor Brent Spiner plays.
    2. Jean-Luc Picard. Just because.
    3. Deanna Troi. I sense this would be a good thing.

Sad part is, I actually liked all these characters during the original series run and mostly up until First Contact.

Data became annoying after getting the emotion chip in Generations and Brent Spiner was way overused in various subsequent roles.

Picard was one of my favourite characters but pretty much everything from Insurrection on turned him into a giant twat.

And Troi has become nothing more than a background prop. Not that she was used all that much better in the series, which I guess is a reflection more of the writers/producers than Marina Sirtis. I actually like Marina Sirtis. Just not Troi.

Raffi. Worf breaks his pacifism after listening to her bleat on about what a dick "JL" is and pulls The Weyoun Maneuver.

Raffi: "Can't make a single decision without consulting your goddamn ego? Can ya J-"

    *SNAP*

    <awkward silence>

Worf: "Ahem. Well, what can I say sir - If you were any other man, I would NOT have killed her where she stood."

Wesley: "Hey, I understand that reference!"

    Picard: "Shut up, Wesley!"

Deanna: "It's good to have you back sir!"

Damn - she was Tess in TLOU?

As much as I disliked S2 of Picard, I never took issue with Wershing's performance. She was a fantastic Queen; I don't think anyone could have done better with the material she had to work with.

ETA: Or is he a captain?

Sean's video refers to him as the Captain of the Titan.
