I would bet on it. The generation writing this show was raised on Simpsons references.

If you're younger than 35, The Simpsons have been on TV for your entire life. If the series runs for another five years, it'll be older than the character of Homer Simpson.

    Oh! Right!
The one key crew position that wasn't filled in yet was doctor.
    Now we know.
    It's Zero.

    Medicine is a science.

If Tendi on LDS can go from nurse to science officer, Zero can pull double-duty.

I think the show overall isn't bad and definitely shows promise; this episode really rubbed me the wrong way for the reasons I've outlined.

Where did you hear that bullshit? Clearly, a large segment of our society has deemed Facebook and Twitter to be more reliable sources than doctors and scientists!

I know, I was talking about science officer in the same way Spock is a science officer and not a medical officer.

Spock, who can rejig tricorders, Spock? Despite that being engineering?

There's always been overlap in training for Starfleet officers. As mentioned, Tendi is going to shift to Science Officer in LDS S3, because Medical alone is seen as wasting her potential.

Anyhoo, TV Tropes lists Rok Tahk as the Science Person and Zero as the Ace Pilot, or have they fucked it up?

    Prodigy S01E08 "Time Amok"

    - The team (especially Gwyn) needs to find a way to prevent future takeovers and intrusions from Dreadnok and the Diviner. I realize they know the ship better than our young crew, but this incident should put it front and center that as long as those two have access to command codes and computer systems even from light years away, they'll never be safe.

    - I liked the approach this time, no pun intended. I'm not a time travel fan, or a time paradox fan, but this was handled really well. I like it when a kids show doesn't treat kids like idiots, and just says what the problem is in plain language, but not dumbed down or simplified to the point where it's absurd.

    - I was glad to see Rok-Tahk gets to shine. She's definitely the heart of the crew, no question. Spending all of that time alone, poor thing, and afraid to take on the responsibility Gwyn felt she should be assigned. I'm glad both of them resolved that issue, and so we get a Rok-Tahk who is a little older, a little wiser, and a lot more educated on engineering, science, and mathematics.

Also, that ending? Right in the feels.

    9/10.

This is a very sweet show, and I appreciate what the writers are doing here.
Also, points to Kate Mulgrew, for just being awesome.

She still married to Ohio's former governor? You might want to do some digging on his corruption scandals. Granted, she doesn't like Trump, but that's not really a high bar.

Mind you, my dislike for comes from commercials like these:

Why? Because invariably, I'd pay my phone bill, on time, and South Central Bell would turn my phone off for non-payment. Bit of a shite company if you ask me.

She was married to Tim Hagan, who ran for Governor in the early 2000s (he lost to Bob Taft). They divorced a number of years ago.

is there an explanation for how the Deviner had no idea where the ship was all that time BUT he was capable of transmitting a command (across a very long distance) which was accepted and implemented? And without HoloJaneway knowing?

I really liked the episode but that was the one bit that took me out of it some.

I mean... once he received the location of the ship from that Ferengi, it's basically sending the override codes to the Protostar like Kirk did with the Reliant, right?
I'd guess Chakotay's command codes that can be used to delete Janeway could also be used to make her program not be informed of certain things happening on the ship. Making sure what's happening doesn't get logged with the main computer or whatever.

That's part of the mystery, the events between Chakotay captaining the Protostar and it ending up being found empty on that planet by Dal and the crew.

This one was fast paced, and it makes me wish the show were longer than 24 minutes, because it gets so many things right. Yes, Dal has grown on me quite a bit. He's still cocky and headstrong, but he has awareness and his friends to keep him grounded, and it works for him. It really does. Good job on the writers for bringing me around.

Once again, I get reminded that holo-Janeway isn't real, and it's jarring when she gets programmed to be corrupt. I'm hoping once the crew get the ship back (I hope they do), they find a way to patch up some of these rather gaping security holes in the ship. I mean, I get it, ship's experimental, but come on, holo technology should be more secure than that. I bet you Rok can do it.

Speaking of Rok-tahk, she has utterly endeared herself to me. What a sweetie, and she's grown so much just in 9 episodes. I really like what the writers have done with her character, and hope we see her continue to grow stronger, more mature, more capable as the series carries on.

On that note, Gwyn makes a full redemption, as far as I'm concerned. I already liked her anyway, she's my second favorite character, but there was always the question (at least for me) of whether her father could convince her, temporarily, of the rightness of his actions, however he may justify them, but it was good to see she was firmly in with her friends, and his conditioning has no hold over her. I do want to know more about this revelation he has, and I already figure the Federation played a huge part in it, but we'll have to see.

I seriously hope they rescue kitty cat (I know he/she/they're Caitian). I think that's a new thread that will be picked up soon, anyway. Lots of foreshadowing there. Kitty may be Chekhov's gun. I mean other Chekhov.

    Random thoughts:

    * Starfleet uniforms looking real spiffy!

    * Coffee.

    * Janeway's speech about Starfleet fighting a hopeless battle to bring hope to others made me tear up. Yes, yes yes yes, that is why I love Star Trek. The belief that there is good, and that good people can join together to bring hope to the hopeless, to fight in their stead and by their side for their liberation, to rescue them from oppression and evil, that is what I believe in. Thank you, Janeway, for saying it. Thank you writers for knowing why someone like me fell in love with Star Trek in the first place.

"Today you're risking everything on a seemingly impossible mission to save others; to bring hope to a hopeless cause. Nothing's more Starfleet than that." - HoloJaneway

    * Murph makes a good Zero.

This one gets an easy 9/10.
Come on part two, don't let me down. I want to give the season finale a 10. Make it so.

This is a sophisticated kids show, I like that they don’t dumb shot down, yet they clearly explain how things work and what Starfleet and the Federation stands for.

    Season 1, Episode 10

    Highlights and Observations

Ha! I knew Janeway was faking! Good work by Gwyn who went and upgraded her systems to keep future security holes from causing trouble to the rest of the ship. Also, Janeway can take solid form, which is awesome, because I caught myself saying "get his ass, Janeway," when she was defending Gwyn from the Diviner.

Rok is going to be a fantastic engineer in the same vein as Scotty/LaForge/O'Brien/Torres/Tucker. I'm glad she wants to use her brain over her brawn, and she's good at it.

    Murph is best helper.

J'ankom Pog finally got the chance to really shine. He seems like a good security officer rather than an engineer.

Zero going full Medusan was awesome. That was a great way to stop the Diviner, and it came out of left field, I wasn't expecting that kind of thing at all. To put it another way: "Wow!"

Poor Gwyn, first finding out the truth about their people, and then being mind blasted, well, mind flesh wounded, really, by Zero when he was making the Diviner insane in the membrane.

I seriously rooted for Dal as he went to rescue Gwyn. This show has solid character development all around.

Kitteh speaks and has claws. Adorable.

Speaking of... um... speaking, the little scene between the two miners was great. "I've kept these feelings locked away for so long.." sounds like a budding romance to me.

Final scene with Admiral Janeway heading off to get her Chakotay was pretty cool. Can't wait to see how that works out!

    Ruminations

Well, now that we've got the basic plotline laid out, and very well I might add, I can't wait to see what lies ahead for our crew, especially when they encounter a Starfleet vessel, unless Gwyn remembers in time. I'm curious to see how that will develop. All in all this was a supremely satisfying season ending, while keeping it open for what may come in the season(s) ahead. Prodigy won me over in a handful of episodes, and had me cheering by the season finale. Not bad for a "kid's show." Good job, creative team. I can't wait to see what's next.

    Final episode score: 10/10.

Season 1 score: 8/10. Get his ass, Janeway.

I read somewhere that season one has 20 episodes.

    Yep.
Can't find the return date though.
I don't think Paramount has decided.
I mean, it's gotta be sometime between the rest of Discovery, and the start of Picard.

Unfortunately, there's no next episode date. Memory Alpha has the next episode slated for December. Whether or not that's just another way of saying TBA I don't know, but if it is December, it might as well be season 2.

Prodigy has already been renewed for a second season. Season One has an order of 20 episodes. I think you're going to see the second half of season one in mid- to late-2022 with Season Two dropping sometime in late-2023.

Oh! I sure wish they'd say that kind of thing up front. So many modern Trek shows run about 10-15 episodes, so I thought that was the full season.
