ok. yea. and monkeys presumably flew out of Sisko's ass. I'm not a canon purist, but, the episode in question, Benny did not write a book. He wrote a short story.

Never thought there was a question of Benny having existed? That Sisko basically had a similar experience to Picard's flute lesson but with his own distant ancestor.

But Yeah, DS9 was a short story that was never published, not a novel.

It's been a while but I thought that the upshot of Far Beyond the Stars plus Shadows and Symbols was that Benny Russell was an invention of the Pah Wraiths to make Sisko think he was crazy and falter on his path of being the Emissary.

Ira Steven Behr pitched an ending for the series that showed Benny Russell walking around the Paramount lot looking at the DS9 sets. I think there's a distinct possibility that Benny is either a reincarnation/preincarnation or an alternate timeline version of The Sisko.

I love how the writers objected with "wait, so is TOS also Benny's dream? And TNG? And Voyager, which will still be running after this?" and Behr responded "I don't care who's dreaming those, I'm writing about DS9."

Oof. This one hits hard. Excellent episode, as I've come to expect from SNW, but we lose Hemmer, one of my favorite characters! What a way to go, though, and I can appreciate Hemmer's arc for what it is. La'an taking time off is completely understandable, and I didn't know it, but I guess she is back for season 2? I'm also glad we get to see Uhura realize she is where she belongs, and how she'll definitely grow into that role on the Enterprise.

As far as I'm concerned, SNW is 9 for 9, and I'm curious to see how they will finish out this season.

Got to admit, that this episode kind of let me down.

Yeah, ripped off bigly but still an improvement over the last two episodes IMHO.

Sad to see Hemmer go. I was really starting to like him.

Hopefully La'an's freelance mission takes a while. She annoys me.

I got a kick out of M'Benga saying that a Sombra-class ship "uses the same parts as a Constitution-class" so they could use the Enterprise sets to depict another ship like they did in TOS.

He was one of the new characters I was starting to really like.

I really hope they don’t bring in Scotty.

Unless their goal in the show is to piecemeal replace everyone with the original characters?

Will Erika get replaced by Sulu at some point? Of course we know Jim Kirk himself will be showing up next season.

There's homages, then there's blatant rip off. This fell into the later category. Voyager did it better, their Hirogen were clearly inspired by Predator without BEING predators.

Which was a shame, because the setup and production values were fantastic, the scene with Pike as the host with the most was fun, and I like the characters.

There's also a question of how exactly Gorn can cooperate to run ships if they are like this. That didn't make a lot of sense. And somehow they've been pacified by DS9 timeline, as we know Gorn are sharing Cestus III with humans.

However, this isn't the first time they've been shown to be this frightening. In the mirror universe we saw Archer fight a Gorn, and he clearly has no shot against it without tricking it. So they upped the Gorn power level from TOS already. It's almost like that even within Trek lore the myth of Kirk vs the Gorn is more important than the details of the episode itself, and that's pretty interesting to me.

I liked Hemmar, but having actual character death in Trek is so rare that I'm good with that storyline. Hemmar wasn't on long but will remain quite memorable now. And yeah, its absolutely appropriate in an Aliens inspired episode.

So I'd put this one in the midrange. If they came up with a better take on Gorn I would have loved it, as it is it's an OK episode because everything surrounding that was very well done, impactful and memorable.

This is Star Trek, Tasha got MORE character growth after death.
Hemmer will be back as his own evil granddaughter with an eyepatch.

If we're going with the idea that the Gorn are basically xenomorphs, then I'd imagine having different egg hosts result in all sorts of variations between individual Gorn. I'd also imagine that the Gorns space fleet contains a bunch of different kinds of ships that used to belong to their victims.

They even dropped an Arena easter egg by clarifying that the eggs hatch much slower inside Orions. Perhaps the captain from Arena was hatched inside an Orion and as a result grew up with a much slower metabolism and also green?

Hell, Gorn may be a strain of crocodile-hatched xenomorphs.
Like the croco-xeno Bernie Wrightson came up with for "Batman vs Aliens".

But extremely sexy due to the pheromones, hence why Kirk was slowed.

Totally derivative of Alien and Predator.

And you know what?

I fucking loved this episode.

Goddammit... I'm pretty sure the last time Trek actually made me choke up was June 1982.

I'm also a big fan of the idea that Vulcans have the ability to just release their emotional control on command, but that it's not so easy to get the toothpaste back in the tube after. Tracks with the Voyager episode where Tuvok releases his repressed rage and violent urges/memories to overwhelm a telepathic attacker.

I did a similar fanfic for Dr Who where the Doctor (because Time Lords have excellent biofeedback control) could boost his strength temporarily with a massive surge of adrenaline and testosterone, but had to cut himself off from others for hours afterwards as he'd be extremely on edge and aggressive.

And horny.
