Exactly. In less than a handful of episodes and unlike the Federation or Starfleet, haven’t really been a fundamental part of the show or movies ever since.

so then what's your beef about here then?
how has there been more substantial conflation of starfleet and the federation in Kurtzman produced Trek than in other series?

or is this just more of your empty slagging?

I don't know of any conflation of Starfleet and the Federation at all in non-Kurtzman Trek.

    Meanwhile, this:

"You understand what the Federation is, don't you? It's important. It's a peacekeeping and humanitarian armada..."

... drives me absolutely nuts. He's talking about STARFLEET.

Seriously? Starfleet officers are constantly negotiating and signing treaties on behalf of the Federation with rarely a subspace call home.

If we’re talking the Enterprise, it’s the flagship, it’s kind of their thing. I always assumed Kirk and Picard had pre-approval.

As I’ve always understood it, Starfleet existed before the Federation. It was both a peacekeeping and exploratory force operating to advance the interests of a United Earth Government.

When Earth became a member of the Federation, Starfleet extended its services to the Federation at large and held itself accountable to the Federation Council and Federation laws and worked to advance Federation causes but still operated somewhat independently and was still primarily an Earth based and Human-centric service.

Other planets like Vulcan probably had their own space forces which were similarly working for the Federation but which operated independently of Starfleet. Other than Spock I can’t recall any other non-Human Starfleet members in the original series. I guess M’Ress if you count the animated series. In the movies we did get a lot more.

By the TNG era I think most of the various member planets’ space agencies were more closely integrated with Starfleet, like the all Vulcan crew from that DS9 episode and Starfleet itself was probably more fully absorbed as an arm of the Federation.

I haven’t watched Enterprise or Discovery so they may have retconned much of that. I’m not counting the Abrams movies because that was an alternate universe.

Yes and yes, and what that means is that the Federation and Starfleet are much more closely intertwined than a 21st century government and its military are in any liberal democracy. Malta was not signed by the captain of a flagship, with or without pre-approval, and it certainly wasn't negotiated that way.

EDIT: In fact, come to think of it, there is a different historical precedence: Colonialism. Columbus and Picard are both local moving stand-ins for their government, and chosen to be good at it, because their government is so very, very far away. But look at the way countries that experience the US through its military speak about it. From the point of view of, say, Munich, Tokyo, or Baghdad, there is a clear and accurate meaning to saying "the United States is an enormous army, navy, and air force".

The crew of the USS Intrepid was all Vulcan.
Even though we didn't get to see them, and the space amoeba ate them offscreen.

@GhostEcho posted this line from ST2009:
Gawd, that makes me cringe every time.

I just want to respond with:

"No, the Federation is an organization of technological civilizations in the Alpha Quadrant which regulates interplanetary affairs and trade between member worlds, oversees development of space resources within its operating area, and provides defense from threats outside its boundaries.

Starfleet is an agency of the Federation that maintains a fleet of interstellar vessels to support scientific, exploratory, humanitarian, and defensive missions in accord with Federation policy."

I believe that was an ad-lib by actor Bruce Greenwood or a very last-minute script change. That sequence isn't in the "official" version of the film script.

The copy of the script I have says this:

You can clearly see the comment about the Federation was inserted before the "We're even, right?" line -- a line that ended up becoming "Are we done?" in the filmed version.

The point being, I don't put much stock in it but I can see the "wrong font" crowd going absolutely fucking bonkers over it.

That isn't a "wrong font" type complaint. And I didn't say I hated the whole movie because of it. I said that line makes me cringe.

    some casting calls...
    https://www.theilluminerdi.com/2020...6-4KtR6SFLknLMdp4hyIP1XLzhceFnCpRJ8r1Y39I4YIs

First on the list is Yeboah. She’s Black, in her early 20s, and fresh out of the academy. She’s a linguistics genius, bright, promising, and the youngest member of the crew and she can sound “American” or have any other accent. While this isn’t really a whole lot to go on, the breakdown does sound similar to a cross between Hoshi Sato and Travis Mayweather from Enterprise.

Next up is La’an. She’s in her late 20s – early 30s and is the head of Security. She’s badass, physical, and suffers from PTSD. She has an air of vigilance and precision. They’d specifically like someone who is East Indian, Asian, or Middle Eastern, but are open to any ethnicity. She more or less sounds like a combination of every security officer we’ve seen on screen.

There’s no species listed for the character and while the name sounds like it may be Vulcan, it’s hard to say for sure. In the book Last Full Measure, the crew of the Enterprise NX-01 meets a courier named La’an Trahve, who is only described as being “humanoid”. So, for right now, I’m going to say her species is TBD.

Our third breakdown is for Ortegas. She’s in her late 20’s, Latinx, and an experienced vet. She has kept a dry wit even with the combat she’s seen. She’s smart, funny, competitive, and is able to pivot from handling a gun to making a joke. So, maybe a Riker-type? Riker was able to pretty seamlessly swap from being dead serious to cracking a joke so she should fit right in.

The ship’s doctor is a bit of a puzzle. The name is listed as “Biodun” and the description states he is a close advisor to Captain Pike, has an air of “easy erudition”, is male, Black, in his 40s, and curiously, “from the original series”. In TOS, the doctor was McCoy, played by Deforest Kelly and in The Cage’ the doctor was Philip Boyce, played by John Hoyt.

While “New Trek” hasn’t shied away from changing things, the use of a different name has me more than a little confused. After extensive research I couldn’t find any reference to a character with this name and while it’s not unusual for casting breakdowns to use codenames, it doesn’t seem likely here. So, your guess is as good as mine for this one.

Last up we have Biodun’s nurse, Miller. She’s in her late 20s – early 30s, Caucasian, heroic, charming, free-thinking, and “the beating heart” of sickbay. So, more or less, Dr. Crusher?

    My thoughts:

    1. I'd like it if they through in a reference to the crew we saw in "The Cage" - say YM Colt is still around having been promoted to something or other.
    2. Given Boyce's age i can see having a different Doc but I'd like this one to be at least into his 50's as well. make it a quirk of Pike's that he like's his Ship's Surgeon to be well seasoned veterans.
    3. it will depend on the writing of course but too many of the descriptions sound generic and trope-y. We've kind of established by now, for example, that a woman can be head of security - I think I'd get away from that. In fact, 4 of the 5 descriptions are female (and we already have a female XO) - coincidence or pattern?

Did we ever get a first name for M'benga in TOS (the doctor with a specialty in Vulcans)? Biodun M'benga could work...

I wish they'd actually have some characters from The Cage. Jose Tyler, Dr. Boyce, Yeoman Colt, etc.

What "virtue signaling wokeness"? I mean, I'd prefer that they showed us some "established" characters but I don't mind that much that they are using original characters. What has you bothered other than the fact that you don't like minorities and women?

    Enough.

    Post has been reported.

Take your bullshit to the Red Room, you tiny-dicked fuckface asshole.

This forum is for the discussion of movies, television shows and other forms of entertainment. Criticisms are welcome (and expected) but you consistently veer into bigoted, hateful political bullshit.

Your ass should have been permabanned months ago, you worthless douchebag.

@shootER I'll take the warning for my post but this juvenile nonsense needs to stop.

I have no problem with minorities or women, I have a problem with Alex Kurtzman and his production team. It’s clear that they’re going to take the same route as they did with Discovery and push their agenda rather than good storytelling.
