Something tells me an actual member of Ukraine Security Services would not have announced themselves, so it was probably a troll.

Unless, of course, they figured there was an approximately 0% chance of catching any of the people anyway so engaging in a little mild psyops was worth the cost of tipping their hand.

If you see a downed drone, what do you do? Well, if you're a Russian soldier, you poke it with a stick. You won't believe what happens next! (Actually, you probably will.)

This is damned peculiar. You're in the midst of a war that has everyone shitting their pants that it might go global (this is despite the fact that much of the rest of the world is pouring weapons into Ukraine, so it is fucking global at this point) and both your military gear and personnel are getting trashed at rates not seen since at least WWII, if not WWI. What do you do? You scrap the last of your submarines that are closely tied to your nuclear weapons strategy.
This raises the question: If you're worried that the conflict might go nuclear, why scrap a nuke sub? Is it because the thing is just a gigantic piece of shit that it's useless at even firing missiles while in port? Would the metals in it be of more use in stuff you're using on the battlefield now than in the sub? Given that it takes years to scrap such a thing and have its materials reused, it's hardly going to make a difference in the war.

Sounds like they were already being decommissioned and weren't needed. :clyde:

Nuclear war isn't a numbers game where having more means you win, and even with these submarines Russia still has plenty of ways to launch nukes.

They've been replaced by the Borei class. The Borei is faster, smaller, requires fewer crew, and in theory is more stealthy.

We'll see if it actually has anywhere near the capabilities claimed. It's definitely not the equal of the Western subs, even if all that is true.

It's like watching all those Trump cabinet members who were like "duhhrr, Trump won't screw ME over! I'm special and magic! :discuss:".
Except in Russia, and with death.
