Those expense numbers are ridiculous.

If those figures are even close to average for the States, then life there is much more expensive than in "socialist" France. That monthly rent is what one would pay for a very comfortable place in a fairly rich city here (we are paying about $600 a month, for a three-bedroom house), and that figure for utilities is way more than just about anyone here would pay. The car payment would be for someone who has a pretty nice car, not the kind of car someone who is "just getting by" would have. The figure for gas might be about the same, but we are paying 8 or 9 dollars a gallon.

All things considered, I think I like the "socialism" in France. (It isn't socialism, as anyone who knows what socialism actually is could tell you, but almost all Americans would call it socialism.) We have better health care and pay less for it, university is at most a few thousand dollars a year, and we get one month paid vacation every year. We pay more in taxes than Americans do, but we pay so much less for other things that it more than compensates the extra taxes we pay.
