Just when I think I've already seen the most American thing ever the Gatorade Casserole rears its terrifying head
Aren’t you in South Carolina? Like your recent ancestors (grand parents) didn’t whip up whatever they could find. Us Appalachians know.
Live in Ft. Lauderdale, work in Miami. Born in Indianapolis. Moved to Ft. Lauderdale at 6. Went back to Indianapolis for college (Butler). Moved back to Ft. Lauderdale for grad school (FIU). I still feel a strong kinship with my Midwest roots. Most of my maternal family still live in the Indiana/Illinois region.
Ah, well, those of us who remember Grandma's cooking remember tons of Depression era dishes. two of my personal favorites - buscuits and gravy; and fried green tomatoes.
My grandmother had a beef and noodles recipe my mother and I have tried to replicate since her death 30 years ago. So far, no success. But I'm going to keep trying. Her sweet pickles recipe is a favorite of my wife's, as well.
That reads like, "Oh, it's nothing special, just a little bit of this, a little bit of that, just whatever I have lying around." Yabut... The proportions? The tasty, tasty proportions?
Okay, I know it’s Facebook, but the comments are gold! “Apex Nebraska man.” https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1604236474819930&id=100057007792629
There's a local chain around here that people swear by the biscuits and gravy they serve. I've tried it. The gravy is white, as in the same color the flour is. It tastes flour when you eat it no flavor other than that, no seasoning at all. The biscuits are hard and salty. And the gravy in a serving size has about a tablespoon of sausage in it.
You must be talking about Po’ Folks. I worked at one, briefly, back in the early 80s when i still lived in Texas. I felt the same way. “World reknown” my ass. Flavorless pieces of dough.
I got handed down a recipe for lasagna casserole that is legitimately delicious. Never tried substituting the beef with deer, squirrel, or possum but in a pinch I reckon it could be done.
my oldest sister's first husband was like that - squirrel, possum, rabbit it was all the same to him. I never ate anything he cooked. My mother-in-law, though, was from Alaska. She'd tell me "just eat it, it's beef" when in actuality, it was reindeer or moose or some other damn thing.
I would eat any of that, just to find out what it's like. I've eaten ostrich, kangaroo, zebu, hedgehog, monkey... You eat a lot of strange things when you travel to foreign countries.
A thread about sampling bone broth based fruit sodas. https://bsky.app/profile/courtneymilan.com/post/3mpehr2ocb22o *spoiler* it’s not good.
