    Same reason Nazis killed kids.
Everyone is a potential enemy, so get 'em while they're little and weak.
    Or, in short, cowardice.

Because their freedom to murder mass numbers of little kids triumphs over little kids being able to grow up.

It remains to be seen how this recent shooter got that ability and whether there were opportunities for intervention to prevent the shooting.

    Yeah...

I hear or read about mass shootings, or even random shootings. Most of the time my reaction is that it sucks and it's tragic.

For some reason these last two shootings have somewhat gotten to me. The Buffalo shooting, most of the victims were older people, over fifty, one was 86.

This school shooting, the kids still had their whole life ahead of them. They had two more days of school until summer vacation. They spent the last two years not seeing their friends, now their summer vacation is going to be spent knowing their friends died, died where they should be safe, preparing for the rest of their lives. This is going to be something that haunts them for the rest of their lives. When they get older, they're going to ask themselves " What could I have done?", "Why them, not me?".

If I had to go from historical precedent, I'd wager there will have been plenty of warning signs--disciplinary problems at school, interactions with the police, threats ignored--in this case.

As for the "arm everybody" and "good guy with a gun," it's certainly the case that the only armed person at the school was the bad guy.

As for "if guns are outlawed," well, there's no point talking about something that isn't going to happen.

It's time to get serious about securing schools.

Even in Texas, the sale of guns is regulated. An 18-year-old couldn't buy a handgun from an FFL, for instance. My guess is the gun will have been stolen from someone close to the shooter.

As for mental health, I predict there will have been plenty of indication this person was on a bad path, and that no one took it seriously.

There's a reason these shootings happen in public gatherings where there is no/little armed resistance. They're the "soft" spots.

It's a lesser risk that a child will be hit by a stray bullet passing between security and the gunman, than that the child is trapped in a classroom with the gunman awaiting execution.

yes.. that's very astute that he just as likely was able to acquire the weapons(s?) used either from a friend or family member who'd failed to effectively secure them. still, acquiring one legally in TX doesn't seem particularly difficult

you're not predicting shit though. It's quite clear there were indications this guy was about to snap... the problem is there's nothing useful or accessible in place to prevent that from happening.

    based on what, exactly?
the math seems wrong as you've already doubled the number of guns and multiplied the chances they're being actively used as the nut job and the McJob exchange fire.

Huh? That's completely illogical. By your reasoning, the police shouldn't respond because that would only increase the number of guns on the scene.

The risk of a child being hit by an errant shot in an exchange between the gunman and security is low. If the children are inside a classroom, very low. If the gunman goes on his rampage unimpeded, the likelihood of children being shot and killed is very high.

And even if security fails to stop the gunman, the exchange may bide time for potential victims to escape and for police to arrive in force.

And, of course, if there's armed security on the scene, the shooter may elect not to attack there in the first place.

Mass shooters attack places where they're unlikely to face resistance.

Could we maybe split this off into it's own thread? It sounds like at least 21 people are dead, most of them 4th graders and younger. A little confusing that this is in a thread about shooting at a Florida high school.

This is all so fucked up. :(
