The mad lads and lasses have been at it again "Wicked Game" Tango Amazing Grace / House of the Rising Sun / Gloria What Child Is This? / Wonderwall
A half cover: (It's a special 25 year anniversary edition that's stripped down and with someone else singing half the song.)
I did. It's not a cover, though. It's the title track from Springsteen's 11th album (though the original version--like the rest of the album--is mostly acoustic, so maybe it is something of a cover?). On the 26th I saw him in concert for the first time and it was awesome. The best part of the tour (besides the protest theme) is that Tom Morello is back as part of the band and delivered another face-melter when they did that song.
Yeah it is an interesting one. For those who don't know the original Ghost of Tom Joad was written and performed by Bruce Springstein. Rage Against the Machine then covered it. Now Bruce sometimes has Tom Morello (lead singer and guitarist of Rage) play with him using much of the electrical guitar work from the Rage version. Whether it constitutes a cover or not I'm not sure but it is a great collaboration and a damn good song.
Tom originally toured as part of the band during the Australian(?) leg of a tour in the 2000s when Steve Van Zandt was tied up filming The Sopranos. Morello also did a studio recording of the song with Bruce that appears on the 2014 High Hopes album which, coincidentally, consists of cover songs and new recordings of older Springsteen songs.
Here's a song that I bet most people don't know is a cover, let alone where it originated from: It was originally used in a porno documentary called "Sweden: Heaven and Hell." To get the explicit sex scenes past the censors, they had later shots of people claiming how Swedish sex clubs ruined their lives. You know, like how the character of Hawkeye on MASH didn't have porn mags, but did have things like "Nudist Monthly."
I heard this cover of one of my favorite Springsteen songs and I think I like it better than the original. The stripped-down instrumentation and key/tempo change sound really nice to my ear.
