I'm always conflicted on stories like these. Firstly, it pisses me off that Trump's goons are fucking kidnapping innocent people, not giving them due process, either sending them to a country they've never been, imprisoning them, or dropping them in the middle of nowhere with no way to get home. Any other presidential administration would have been facing criminal charges, but not this one.

Then again, on the other hand, I want to shake them by the shoulders and tell them THIS WAS ALWAYS THE PLAN. This was always going to be the plan because that's what fascism and white nationalism is, that's how it functions, and these people were fine with it because they thought it would happen to someone else and not them and now they're feeling just a tiny sliver of what so many people in the US are having to experience every day.

@Asyncritus and @Bickendan how understandable is Haitian Creole?

My daughter speaks it fluently, after four years in Haiti. Personally, I find it very hard to understand. Think pidgin English with a very bad accent, and a bunch of crazy words thrown in for good measure, and you'll have an idea what Haitian Creole (or any other Creole) sounds like to French people.

That said, it is still more understandable than the francique of Le chanson de Roland in the original text...

I could understand about every other word if they were speaking full Creole. Enough to get my attention if I wasn't expecting it, but not enough to get the details of what they were saying. That said, they usually could understand my French when I processed their Western Unions and English was a challenge.

Well, French is the official language, after all. Any educated Haitian should understand it and even speak it more or less (often "less than more").

Among other things, my daughter taught French at a fancy high-school for rich people's kids. (She even had the president's son in her class at one point.) But usually the students didn't want to believe something was good French, because they were "sure" it was something else. They tried very often to correct her, for exemple, on "cocotier". "Non, c'est un cocoyer." And the fruit was still a "coco" in their minds, no matter how many times she told them it is a "noix de coco". They were pretty sure she just didn't know French all that well. (She did all her schooling, from pre-school to her master's degree, in French, and speaks French like any other educated native-born French person, with no accent whatsoever. My French is pretty good, but they can always hear my accent. )
