Today I happened to have reason to talk with a coworker about the time someone dropped a socket in a nuclear missile silo and caused an explosion. Related to that is the fact that the US government has response teams to deal with the fact that nuclear missiles sometimes feel a yearning to break free from the confines of their silos and try to launch themselves. Then I got to thinking about how FF would frequently claim that "weird shit" would happen at nuclear reactors and nuclear missile silos when there were UFOs around. At which point I said, "Huh, an easy way to cover up that some defective hardware nearly caused a bad accident, would be to claim that all the lights people saw in the area were aliens and not the 'Oh, shit!' Squads sent in to try and keep things from going kablooey! And that's almost certainly what's been going on."
