Basically, for the entirety of its run, Game of Thrones put out a new season every year. House of the Dragon just wrapped up it's first (?) season, and there won't be any more episodes for like two years. There was a rhythm to the way TV used to work. So you didn't have to keep juggling a kajillion things in your head, like what something was on, when it was on, or when new episodes were coming out. You could kind of ballpark it in your head, knowing that if you got close, enough things would start popping up in places like social media, the news, etc., that would remind you of the thing returning. Now? You've got 15 billion streaming services, shit goes away for literally years, if it comes back at all, and the places you could rely on to jog your memory about when something was coming back (maybe they're not talking about the new season of a show you're interested in, but they're talking about the fact that the new season for TV is going to be starting, and that's enough to remind you that the thing you like is coming back soon), are all talking about the newest thing to be released. Add in the fact that people are more busy/distracted because they're living in a country where the economy is imploding, there's constant annoyances from useless app notifications, robocalls from scammers, and more, and it's hard to stay invested in anything because fuck, who has the time or the brain power to do that?
Added to my weekly rotation: Dark Matter S2 I won't pump this show as much as I will some of the others I've mentioned. I am a sucker for a well done mystery box (literally in this case) show and as far as technical execution, I can't find fault. It's complex and well told. The flaw is - I think - the lead actor. I'm not saying he lacks talent but...I just don't find him, the character at least, likeable. Even the variant that's supposed to be the sympathetic victim of all this. On the other hand, Jimi Simpson is here and he elevates everything he's in. Ryan and Layton are more interesting characters than the lead and that is... awkward. But I'll keep watching.
I think part of this is a result of a fractured television audience. There are so many different options for tv viewing these days and I really don’t know where to invest my time. I find that I’m actually watching a lot less tv as a result. I really should check in with you guys more often to see what’s out there. I find that we have similar tastes.
I always have low-key concern that I'm missing something great because, who can even keep up anymore. I find myself googling "New TV release in August" or whatever every month just in case.
I like Reacher - much more than I thought I would. I like the character and I like the back up recurring characters. I also like the storylines. They are intriguing. but, I understand it's a book series, so that makes sense. More time and energy is spent on actual story telling and characters and less on flash and sets. I watched a series about 2 decades ago called Paradise, but I doubt it's the same. just not the kind of show I would think anyone here would watch. I think the issue with discussing tv shows is that politics has wormed it's way into entertainment. TV shows and moves have ALWAYS been liberal and had liberal (i.e. forward) thinking. when it gets cringy, I can ignore it and tune it out. Apparently, some people can't. So, instead of discussing tv shows, people end up disucssing politics. and no one wants to bring negativitity to the things they enjoy. So, no, no one is discussing tv shows.
