Far right populism is rising rapidly in so many parts of the world now, especially in the West. Germany and the AfD, France with Marine Le Pen and her far right protege Jordan Bardella, and Nigel Farage's bobbleheaded excitement over meeting the same and talking about how Britain will form strong bonds with people like Bardella. Giorgia Meloni and her fascist party in Italy, and of course the United States and its government's wholesale embrace of the fascism it once pretended to deny itself. The United Nations, formed in order to help prevent future events that would lead to what was experienced in aftermath of World War 2 just sits back and lets the United States do whatever the fuck it wants to do, and while it has been letting the US do what it wants to do for a long time, all forms of the social and political contract that kept the US in mild check (to a point, kind of, maybe, a little, well... ) has just been completely written off and ignored. The US could bomb Canada tomorrow and the UN would probably be like "whadayagonadoo? Please don't bomb Canada, United States, or I'll have to ask you again not to bomb them, please." Trump has most definitely egged all of this along, and it has encouraged far right parties in other countries to shoot their shot, to grab on to the unsettled grievances that many people are experiencing and use them to build power. Rosa Luxembourg once asked "socialism or barbarism?" as an outcome of where the Western world was heading if they wouldn't stop trying to compromise with the far right, and here we are. Hell, at this point it isn't even "socialism or barbarism?" in the United States because we've reached a point where "should we feed children?" has become a contentious political position. Mamdani is a mildly left wing Democratic Socialist hewing closer to Social Democracy and he's still getting frothing at the mouth pushback from people, even people in his own party as if he's somehow gone too far for feeding kids and fixing potholes, oh the humanity! Yet the choice is still to be made, and our governments have clearly made efforts to keep us out of the decision making process in myriad ways. Right now, the right wing feels emboldened, and why shouldn't they? They're seeing success they haven't seen in decades, and a new world of misinformation marketing that's driving them onward and upward. It seems they crave barbarism, and want to take the rest of us down with them. Also, yeah, I was thinking of making a whole thread on this subject, but fuck it, so I just went ahead and posted it here in the Orange Fascist thread.
