I suspect that the church realized that they wouldn’t get another pass, like they did last time, and picked Leo specifically because he’s an American who’d be able to stand up to Trump and not alienate American donors.

Yad Vashem has a different take on that.

It's not quite as clear cut as the Pope looking the other way. Neither is it true that the Pope was a squeaky clean hero. This book may help shed some light on a very dark period of time.
