Vlad Returns: With Bunches of New Stuff!

Hello, Forgers!

It's been quite some time, hasn't it? Well, I've come to give you some quick updates and a peak at the mountains of new stuff I've been doing. First, a quick update on life.

I'm still in college, finishing fairly soon. I've been writing a LOT more, and will have completed my Creative Writing minor at the end of this semester. On that topic, I recently won the Eric Sharp Gateway Fiction Award for a flash fiction I wrote called "Don't Take It From Me." I was also awarded Honorable Mention for the Rebecca Pitts Poetry Award for an old poem titled "Teddy Bear."

The biggest news as of now is that I'll be in Los Angeles for the coming Fall semester, studying at California State University - Northridge for creative writing and animation. I'll be there for a full five months, and hopefully I'll get some networking done at Nick Animation Studio-- perhaps even pitch a cartoon series.

Speaking of Nickelodeon, I've put in for various opportunities at the studio, including the Nick Writers' Program, the Nick Artists Program (both the Storyboard and General Track), and I'll soon be submitting an application to the Nickternship and to a new opportunity they've just opened up for writers.

Finally, I'd like to share all of my new work with you! I've DRASTICALLY updated the Petty Torture Productions website, and now it includes all of my series concepts ideas, my animated shorts, my absurd doodles (including Snacks of the Future), and my better writings. The newest concept I'm working on is one called "Mallory Bash," and it revolves around an adventurous little girl who spends her childhood exploring the county she lives in and documenting all the new people, places, and events. Think Ren and Stimpy meets Rugrats. If you can.

Minor quibble . . . the first page of your website is an "Enter Site" splash page? We stopped doing that in the 90s, brother. Home page of your site should be just that - a home page that makes all the site content available and/or discoverable. Not an extra click just to get to that page.

Here's some work from the new Mallory Bash series concept, just to give you all an idea of my latest joy.

Just finished a new project in my 3D character modeling class. It's Garnet from Steven Universe.

She was sculpted, painted, and unwrapped in Zbrush, then brought into Maya 2015 for shaders, rigging, weight painting, posing, lighting, and rendering.

Especially since it's hard to find the click point on a touch based interface. I was on my tablet, and came real close to giving up. Otherwise, on the content.

Two new characters for Mallory Bash! And a new map of Nightdrift County.


First is Ava Baker. Mallory's extremely strange neighbor. She lives in a cottage just inside of Brookwood Forest, and no one knows much about her.









Second is the first character design for Mallory's fourth grade teacher, Ms. Eve Parker.








Finally is the map of Nightdrift County. By tomorrow afternoon, there will be a more detailed map of Brookwood Forest.

Hello, hello! Here's a whole shit load of new stuff for Mallory Bash!

Glad to see you moving beyond "every character smoking a cigarette" mode.

I really thought it was time to broaden my horizons. Tobacco is great, but there's a whole world beyond the smooth, toasted taste of a hard-earned cigarette.

A non-Mallory Bash related piece, but a good one, nonetheless.

More new stuff! This is what I've done since I came back from CTN-X, where everyone is better than me. Profoundly better.

Can't see the latest images, but I enjoy your stuff. You have a very definite identifiable style.

Don't worry that others are better. Let you desire to be as good drive you to make your own stuff better. Learn from others. Borrow. Steal, even. You don't have to invent every tool in your toolbox.

Thanks. I do borrow and steal quite often. It's a well-known tool in the industry to do so. My latest work has been very much inspired by Anthony Holden.

New piece. This is Dinah the Pixie Girl. She has a magic wand that is powered by an unquenchable candle flame.

Two new pieces, including one that I believe is my best piece as far as value, color, and lighting.

I assume you mean the first one? Because that piece is very well put together in terms of lighting and tonal values.

Mallory Bash's hometown, Moonblush Village! Here are several maps which feature things such as street and forest names, neighborhood districts, zoning districts, and major landmarks.

The Petty Torture Productions website has been COMPLETELY redesigned in an effort to create a more cohesive and simplified visual aesthetic and consistent navigation.

All but the actual series pages themselves have been assimilated into the new design. Go check it out and let me know if you find any weird issues.

Also, new material has been posted in various places, including a section to view videos on the About page and completely new layouts for the Illustrations and Doodle Grove pages (much MUCH better).

It's interesting to go back to your older stuff and see the evolution in your style and skill level. The newest pieces are still recognizably related to the older ones but the polish and execution are sooooo much better now. Which is not to say that the old ones are bad, but they are noticeably more crude.

Yessir. I'm always learning. Especially since Los Angeles. Things have changed quite a bit since then.

The Mallory Bash section of the website has been COMPLETELY redesigned. Now it's extremely easy to navigate, with every page linked on the left side of the screen and the top nav bar consistent with the entire Petty Torture website.

It also comes with LOTS of new content, including animations, scripts, massively culled springboards, and some updated artwork.
