The most disturbing murder trial I ever covered was the Billy Ferry case in the mid 80s in Tampa. Billy's family knew he was going crazy and pleaded with everyone they could think of for help. They never got it and he ended up throwing gasoline over a checkout lane at a Winn-Dixie store and killed several people as well horribly injuring several others. I wonder if anyone will pull on the threads and trace back this individual's journey into madness and murder.
So much of this goes back to Reagan's war on the mentally ill and his defunding of mental health services. The US seems to be a firm believer in more cops, fewer helpful institutions, so the police end up shooting a mentally ill person who was free to commit acts of violence because there was no one to help them.

What's the moral difference between starving the elderly and handicapped to death by decimating their retirement money, and putting them into gas showers, and killing them all in one go?
