.32 cal is a low power inefficient round. :( If you are buying it for self defense you better hope your target isn't a large framed adult male or you will likely piss them off. Option B you can place all the bullets exactly where you want them on a moving adrenaline charged target - good luck with that! Seriously, the .32 round has almost zero stopping power - I don't know how much experience you have with family, friends & co-workers getting shot or shooting people, but putting someone down quickly (immediately stopping the threat) firing one or two shots with this weapon would be a "low percentage" shot meaning not likely to succeed. It's all about the physics/physiology when it comes to killing efficiency. And if you don't want to use lethal force, don't use a gun at all. Just my 2 cents.

Your best bet is to research foot-pounds of energy - stopping power - ballistics gel testing - and other such subjects to make your decision on what round (not necessarily gun make)
would be sufficient. The second weapon you linked to (9 mil) would be a step up though. .38, .45, .357 are other examples of more efficient handgun rounds. Rounds to avoid are .25 and .32 for example.

That's the first time I've ever heard someone describe a Hi-Power as having a lot of recoil. It's pretty tame to me, especially compared to polymer 9mms (which still don't have much kick to me).

Go with the Hi-power, that .32 is just going to piss off whatever you hit with it. Fuck, if your budget is that low, you can get a Hi-point in .45 for under $200

My budget is that low. I was looking at Hi-points, but they're ugly, and my buddy says they are for "broke ass niggaz". That said, I'll probably buy a Hi-point in 45 APC.

It will chamber and fire the .45 acp cartridge reliably enough.

ghettos tend to spread - today's "nice neighborhood" becomes tomorrow's "this used to be such a nice neighborhood." you can't keep running forever! That said whatever gun you decide on, get the proper training and practice, practice, practice! Guns aren't "magic" and just having one doesn't really cut it if you aren't prepared to use it.

I hear ya. My neighborhood has a long way to go before it reaches ghetto status, but it's not super nice either. I have already seen my neighbor chick pull down her pants and slap her ass in the middle of the road while screaming at the dude that was hauling ass outta there: "And you're broke OK, and you're bald, OK..."

No gunshots, though. Stay safe, Krieg! :backhug:

You sure that shit won't explode in your face? For the price you're willing to pay I'd go with a used pump action shotgun. Commands a lot more respect. Perps don't even have to see it, the sound alone might be warning enough. And if shots absolutely have to be fired, you might even hit something

negative - at very close distance a shotgun pattern doesn't have the chance to "open up". Bottom line if your attacker is ten feet away and you fire a shotgun, the total diameter of the shot pattern might be 3 inches or so. You will miss as easily as firing any handgun with that much room for error. Shotguns are only effective within a limited range - not too close, not too far (because the small diameter lead pellets lose energy quickly). So if you use a shot gun for close range self defense, use deer slugs versus pellets. I would recommend a Remington 1100 semi-auto in 20 gauge firing deer slugs. It fires a shot every time you pull the trigger, and the recoil is manageable for any medium framed male, so you can "stay on target" and focused until the "threat" is eliminated. Pump action shotguns are okay, but you lose precious time pumping the gun to chamber another round, plus you might get "off target" engaging your (likely moving by now) target and that's never going to increase your survivability odds.

Granted a "sawed off" shotgun will open up quicker, but they are not legal, and you could end up looking like a bad guy.

Do NOT do the rack a round with a pump shotgun as a "warning", all it's going to do is give your position away, if someone's at the break into an occupied house phase, they are most likely at the murder the occupants phase, especially if you're in a very impoverished neighborhood.

good call! The intruder's nerves and senses are likely on edge and they might shoot out of reflex. Good tactical thinking there!

A shotgun is the best bet as long as Dr. Krieg doesn't feel the need to take a weapon out of the house. A pistol is what you use to get to a long gun, but can save your life in a very desperate situation.

Most of my experience is with 9mm Berretas so I am basing it off that. I have to admit the old American .45 the Thai Army still uses have the most kick of any hand gun I have ever fired. Of course, when I was there the Thais were still daily using an old Jeep built in 1943 as well.

Buy the shotgun and wear a duster to conceal it.

then a pistol would be your best bet. Whether open or concealed, practice retrieving and firing the gun because criminals generally don't give you all day to defend yourself. :nono:
The WORST example I can think of is boneheads who hike in bear country and keep their weapon in their back-pack....with their food.
"hold on mister bear! Give me a few seconds to take off my back pack and dig out my gun. Oh, you just want food? I'll toss you my back pack then.......here you go! Oh shit......."

yep - big red flag (to me, but 22+ years of "situational awareness" will do that to a person) is anyone wearing long or bulky coats in hot weather. :calli:
If I see someone in a store wearing more concealing clothing than typical I think "shop lifter" immediately. :chris:Stores are constantly busting people for having a several t-bone steaks shoved down their baggy sweat pants for example. I'll take a rain-check on your "ass crack steak" cookout, if that's okay. Thus criminals often carry rifles & shotguns under loose/long clothing too.

Really puts a cool spin on the old line "is that a gun in your pocket or are you happy to see me?" :brood:

not a fan of the desert in general, but tolerable in the winter. The sonoran type desert is beautiful - many different type of cacti and other vegetation. And it has a huge variety of wildlife too. The mohave type desert is ugly to me - just brush mainly. The ugliest desert I've been to is Kuwait - no trees, no rivers, no anything....just sand. :( I just cannot see how that can help a man retain his sanity for long. :unuts:

I'm from the "High Desert". Hot as hell in the summer, cold as hell in the winter, lots of pine trees with no ground clutter. It's the best place on earth.
