For more than a decade I've heard about how great the series "Firefly" was. Though I only ever saw about two episodes and bits and pieces of others to this day I've never understood the fascination it holds for people. Sure it had a great cast of characters played by a group of actors who could actually act (something sometimes rare these days). But it was still basically simple space opera with the obvious western tie ins far more obvious than most.
Well, and the setting, the stories, and the genre mix. But beyond that, it really didn't have much going for it. Ok, so the humour was great. And the costumes, camera work, and the special effects were innovative. Alright, it also had good music and memorable songs. But that is really pretty much it.
Not one goddamn space battle, though. Friggin' ship didn't even have guns, fer crissakes. How could you have a good show on those terms?!?
We see you got them memorization part of the firefly PRAXIS test down but not the comprehension section.
Ironic that a dozen posts and no one has said specifically what was good about certain individual episodes. If someone can point out certain episodes that were particularly good I'll try to go back and watch them. In regards to space battles. Given the series deliberately has connections to Westerns, how can you have a western without at least the occasional major gun battle. Even the family friendly "Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman" had a few of those.
Honestly, we just don't care whether you like it or not. If the premise doesn't appeal to you, then move on.
there were gun battles on the ground. Movie had a space battle. There were a few particularly good episodes but knowing you, you'd just watch those, looking for a reason to dislike them. Either watch the whole hand full of episodes or don't.
It's a serial show so 2 episodes won't do it justice. There are only 13 (I think) plus the movie. Watch them all then form an opinion. For me it was the entertaining characters.
Look I would watch Torres read the Stock Market Report. I've watched her since Cleopatra 2525 and then more recently on Suits.
I find Firefly entertaining in that it doesn't take itself seriously, but that may be why you don't care for it. It doesn't age well. I went back and started the series again. Lots of rough edges to the production and stories. Maybe it was the robot flying dumpster episode that had me thinking, "Are they having me on?"
QFT I never got into Firefly, either. I watched one and a half episodes shortly after I started posting here and Mewa was having a go at trolling over the show, but then I went about my day. It wasn't hard.
Hardcore fans of the show might want to check this out: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Con_Man_(web_series) It got raves at ComicCon, and it's fun to see which s/f actors turn up in small roles.
You gotta push through it. The meatier character stuff happens further along, because you can't do it in the first two episodes, you have to get to know everyone first. It's like how the "shoe booty", episode of "All In The Family", where Archie reveals his abused childhood, doesn't give you the same goosebumps and tears until you've gotten to know him for 5 years as this stereotype bigot first. Can't flip expectations 'til you get 'em.
