World's Largest Aircraft Takes Off for the First Time, Still Looks Like a Butt

The Airlander 10—also known as the world’s largest aircraft, better known as a giant, ass-shaped vessel—took off for the first time today.

The “flying bum,” as it’s apparently known, was supposed to take its maiden voyage on Sunday, but the flight was postponed due to “a slight technical issue.” The aircraft’s maker, Hybrid Air Vehicles, didn’t say on Sunday when the flight would happen, but luckily for ass and aircraft enthusiasts everywhere, it finally took off from Cardington airfield near London.

The flight itself wasn’t long—just half an hour, according to the AP—but apparently drew a crowd of hundreds. The 302-foot aircraft combines elements of “fixed wing aircraft and helicopters with lighter-than-air technology,” resulting in a Frankenstein-esque behemoth that its creators say can stay in the air for over two weeks unmanned.

The AP says the Airlander 10 was originally created for the US military, which wanted to use it “for surveillance in Afghanistan,” but the plan was axed in 2013. (It’s hard to miss a giant butt.)

Unlike other notable aircrafts—like, say, the Hindenburg—the Airlander 10 uses helium to stay afloat. According to Hybrid Air Vehicles, it can also withstand “numerous bullet holes” and operate “in all weather conditions.” As Gizmodo previously reported, it could theoretically be used for academic research, transportation, or as a way to bring material to remote locations.

Also, never forget that it looks like a giant, floating ass.

Airship Maker Vows Giant Flying Ass Will Rise Again

It’s a beautiful day for aerospace and butts. The Airlander 10, the world’s largest aircraft (which also happens to look like a giant ass), has reportedly been repaired and is ready to fly again.

According to a new release from Hybrid Air Vehicles, the ass-craft’s developer, “all major structural repairs are complete,” though the company hasn’t announced when the next flight will be.

The bulging butt-plane took off back in August, but things didn’t go quite as smoothly as, say, a baby’s butt. The aircraft slowly crashed during its landing, damaging the flight deck and many of its instrument panels. Luckily for the crew, they were able to escape without any major injuries.

HVA also noted that the cause of the crash is “fully understood” in a statement, although it conveniently hasn’t explained what the issue was. (We’ve reached out to ask, and we’ll update if we hear back.) It also said it will resume “rigorous testing” as it prepares to take its famous butt-craft to the skies again, which seems like a good idea considering the thing fell to the ground like a humungous, sad sex toy last time.

As we’ve previously written, the Airlander 10 was originally developed for the US military, which apparently wanted to use the incredibly conspicuous floating butt for “surveillance in Afghanistan.” Instead, however, it’s hanging out in the English countryside, making English people sad. Let’s hope its next flight goes more smoothly.
