Comments yes, the word "disagrees", no.

To give creedence to the idea that disagreement is trolling is not something I think we should do.

Talk about a can of worms!

Do you think you'll be able to do this in the next day or so?

Do we have an agreed upon plan of action?

Okay, the plan as I understand is to reset everyone's rep to 10, make posreps count for 1 and negreps not count at all in terms of points. In other words, no more little red squares. Yes?

Oh, and we get rid of the repwarring rule. We just deal with rep comments as if they were posts, like we've been doing all along.

I have 23,645 hard won points myself but it's worth it to shake things up a bit. Hopefully, the board will once again be more about discussion than who is doing what with colored squares.

    Lanzman, sounds fine to me.

    A few comments -
    • Yes that is being proposed
    • I don't agree that this change is beneficial
    • I've yet to hear a good reason for resetting rep
    • Advance notice should be given before improving the board
    • It's your call

That said, let's not become too bogged down with the rep system, it's only as important as we deem it to be. Truth be told we've reset rep points some four+ times already, and clearly that hasn't solved anything, there's no reason to think doing it again will help. We should either accept that the rep system will be abused or remove it altogether.

I think the current proposal has the potential to be something positive. I think the "accept abuse" or "nothing" notion is short-sighted. We aren't just resetting, we are removing the bite of negs which we've never done before.

But the wonderful thing is, we can try something new and if it doesn't work in the end we can always reverse it. Nothing is ever set in stone if it's truly harmful.

I agree with most everything here, except I think we've only reset points once or twice.

Well . . . sort of. Once everyone's rep score is set to ten, their old scores are gone. We couldn't reset someone back to their pre-change score unless we record every single rep score, and I'm not that hard core. We turn the rep system back to its current settings and people would have to rebuild their score the old-fashioned way.

^Almost. You can do a "rebuild reputation" in the AdminCP which will recalculate scores based on existing posts... So pruned posts' rep won't count, along with admin-added points.

Is it okay to make it official, or do you want to hold off until the changes are made?

Minor issue: I don't actually have a clue how to reset all rep to 10. The rest is easy enough.

No, seriously, I haven't found a switch to do this. The only way I can see to do it is to muck with the database directly, and that's kind of a last resort thing.

Can the remaining changes be made sans a rep reset to ten points? It would have the added benefit of being a popular compromise.

Oh, and let's make sure we've everything properly backed up before mucking with the database.

Done. Negreps are worth 0. 0-valued rep displays as disagrees.

EDIT: to undo it, edit functions_reputation.php, and change $reppower *= 0; to $reppower *= -1;. To undo the other part, go into Manage Plugins > Display Reputation Comments in Posts > Edit, change the else to an elseif, and add a third category for 0.

    Well done.

Can you reset everyone's rep, or am I going to have to do that one the hard way?

I only ever did it once. I started out the hard way, manually, and then Nick told me I was a dumbass. He reset it in the database in about 30 seconds.

That's what I was afraid of. I don't want to do that without a full backup. One missed keystroke, one early "Enter", and boom, no more board.

While a reset would be nice, I wonder if unrest would be kept to a minimum if we left the scores be.

I really don't care either way, personally.

Do we not have a recent back-up? I know I've not pulled one, distracted as I've been the last few months . . .
