I've got a big library of CDs I need to rip on to my system in hopes of pairing down physical collection somewhat.
Traditionally, I've used iTunes but I'm looking for alternatives. Is Windows Media Player a viable alternative? Any others worth considering?

Windows media player is fine. Experiment with bitrates and codecs before ripping a lot. I like WMA files but others swear by MP3s. You can set the quality (and size) for each. It also depends on what device you'll be playing them on. MP3s are more universal.

^ Yep. Windows Media Player does a fine job ripping music. I set it to 320Kbps MP3, which is the highest you can select on WMP. Then I use AIMP to listen to all of my music.

320? Interesting. I hear that anything over 256 kbps is just wasted hard drive space. Supposedly our ears can't really hear the difference. In fact, most techies I've read recently say that 192 kbps is about the highest quality you'll ever really need. I personally do 256k, but even that is probably overkill.

Eh, CD quality is 1411 Kbps, so I figure if I can approach that level with a much smaller file size, it's worth it, and since I have 8 TB of storage space, it works fine for me. :D

True, if storage space is no object, knock yourself out! :D

Also, that 1411 kbps is not at all apples to apples, as MP3 data structure isn't the same as PCM WAV files (like CDs), but again, 8TB? Go forth and enjoy your music.

Yep. I use my PC as a home media server. Roku boxes on each TV means access to movies, tv shows, home movies, and about 150 GB of music.
