Would they have shown it on its release date earlier this month had it not gone VOD? No? Well shut up AMC. See you in bankruptcy.

This could really bite movie theaters in the ass. The only reason companies like AMC exist is because of the Paramount decision which blocked the studios from owning movie theaters. If Universal sues over this, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they did so with an aim to get that decision overturned. If studios can once again own movie theaters, you can bet that Disney will be setting up ones that are like mini-theme parks all over the place. It’ll be the destruction of Carthage all over again.

This is great for consumers, but pretty awful for movies as an artistic medium. If Universal wins this fight, no reason to expect movies to be shot for the big screen at all anymore. Any that remain will charge all the money.

That said, fuck AMC. Couldn't happen to a worse chain.

I agree that AMC is slitting its own throat. But this part of the article is interesting:

I don't think the Association is wrong and Universal may have jumped the gun. Clearly customer spending and viewing habits have been affected by the pandemic. If I were them I'd have waited for more reliable data before pulling the plug but as @The Night Funky posted above, there may be a broader strategy at play here.

I thought it was interesting. Everything's coming apart in the seams, it seems. Same thing with the grift in the delivery services like grub hub et al. they force the restaurants they deliver for up to a 30% surcharge.

    It’s their funeral.

The writings been on the wall for years now. Streaming media will put theaters out of business soon enough. Barring a major studio from your chain is just shooting yourself in the foot. People go to theaters to see movies. No one looks to see if a movie they want to see is playing at an AMC theater.

    Bring it on, bitches!

    Regal has joined the fray.
You can expect the other chains to gradually pile on too.

The last movie made less than half of what the last Avengers movie did. Not sure how the rest of Universal’s films did, but I’m sure it’s a pittance compared to the money machine that all the various Disney studios movies are.

Just a quick look they have the Fast and Furious movies, Despicable Me/Minions, Back to the Future which they can't really do anything with, classic monster movies including The Mummy franchise. Kurtzman killed The Dark Universe before it even got going.

I heard on one of my movie shows that Universal is the weakest earning studio.
The theaters forming Voltron against them could really kill them.
They'd better hurry up and kiss the ring.

That's the problem with studios these days, they think they have to make Marvel money, they don't. Paramount thought the same thing with Star Trek, they don't have to make Marvel money. Star Trek will never be that type of franchise, but that's not to say that Star Trek can't be a viable franchise.

You don't have to get very far into it before you realize that Hollywood is basically run by morons, so . . . :clyde:

    Well, that's over.
Something something, OMG until there's a vaccine for this shit I'm not going anywhere a movie theater and I don't care if you both die because someone will scoop up the important shit and make sure that it's available because that's how things fucking work.
