iPhone and iPadd are both spectacular products, but I can't raitonalize the price for either of them. I have a Samsung phone from Verizon with full keyboard that I can use for my infrequent texting and I finally figured out how to get email on it. My refurb Acer netbook does everything I ask of it...not quickly...not slickly, but it gets done. I guess it's kind of like cars: sure I'd love to have a Lexus, but my Escort ZX/2 is paid for and makes beer runs just fine....

Skin will be upgrading when he's eligible for an upgrade. As it stands, the apps would be really useful, but right now the cheapass basic-as-hell LG Accolade is doin' just fine. Plus, it's UA-approved.

I can imagine how the event will go if it ISN'T an iPhone:

"And we're here today to announce an amazing new phone: the Droid (Adjective).

This new android phone runs on a 6 core, 8ghz TI OMAP9 processor.

It has a mini photonic reactor, 100 years battery life, no chargers needed!

The new Droid (Adjective) can run Android 7.2, Windows 8, and Skynet.

And it will ship tomorrow, free on contract."

    ******-CRICKETS-******

Audience: "So... it isn't an iPhone?"

VZ Guy: "No, it isn't. It's better!....."

    ANGRY MOBS EVERYWHERE!!!

This was supposed to happen last month and I've deliberately held off buying a droid x because I prefer the Iphone but hate ATT.

This was never supposed to happen last month. It was always supposed to coincide or follow Verizon's new network deployment.

Finally... this isn't much of a surprise. Forbes had a Verizon iPhone on their cover in November.

If Verizon does end up getting the iphone, it will end up being a good thing for everyone in the long run.

I see a few things happening as a result. AT&T is going to be hurting for a period of time as they regroup to deal with the huge loss of customers to Verizon. I'm willing to bet a significant number of current iphone users are only with AT&T because that is the only company who has it.

AT&T is going to have to find new incentives and pricing plans that exceed what is offered by other wireless companies to try and keep as many people on their service as they can. Which is also a good thing because that means the other carriers will try to follow suit in order to prevent the loss of their customers.

Competition is a good thing. :)

AT&T knew this was coming. That is why they made it so easy to upgrade to the iPhone 4, and in the process lock a tremendous number of carriers into 2 year AT&T contracts.

Unless Verizon is prepared to do a tremendous buyout campaign, this won't have the humongous impact many are anticipating.

In fact, industry analysts are not calling this a game changer. Most likely, this will impact first time smart phone buyers more than existing smart phone buyers.

Yeah, it's a game changer. Contract or no, I will end my service with AT&T the moment I can get my hands on two Verizon iPhones. I'll gladly pay the full $150 contract termination fee to be rid of that horrible, horrible company.

I'm happy with it because I have better coverage "way out". However, there is no denying I get more dropped calls around Memphis than with T-Mobile.

AT&T routinely loses it's signal completely for me on my weekly drives on I20 from Shreveport to Dallas and back. If Verizon can keep me in 3G I'll switch. I'm just amazed that a company that size can't be troubled to put up a few towers along a major highway like I20 that they have countless customers commuting on everyday, all of whom are going to notice gaping holes in the coverage area. I skipped the early iPhone 4 upgrade on purpose and it looks like it is going to pay off. My contract with AT&T ends right around the time the iPhone 5 should be coming out this summer. Hello Verizon.

You only need to use your phone before you leave and after you arrive anyway. Otherwise, you might be using your phone while driving, and I know nobody here would be so utterly stupid as to attempt something like that.

There is no law against talking on the phone while driving. At least in CA.

Regarding AT&T and contracts, i actually paid at the time $75 for early cancellation. I was fine with them when they were AT&T Wireless and then Cingular. When they became AT&T again their customer service went to crap in my opinion as well as their 3G service getting rather sporty. I know that in some cases they will allow some of their antennas to go down without repair. I was with them for almost 10 years. At this point nothing would get me to go back with them.

I use the 3G to stream pandora and other radio stations keeping me from needing satellite radio and from constantly trying to find a radio station which is arguably more distracting than a short call would be. If I'm driving down a straight highway for 184 miles (weekly Thursday night and Monday morning drives for me) and someone calls me I will answer and have a brief conversation sometimes as well. Usually it's work related and less than a minute and I don't feel the least bit bad about it.

About six months ago there were rumors of Verizon getting the Iphone and several of the articles said it would likely happen around Dec, 2010. Looks like it will be Jan, 2011 instead.

Yes, that is true. That is just one of many, many predictions about the iphone being picked up by Verizon.

I do not care about this news as I cannot afford an iphone.
If you can, you have WAY too much loose change.

There's no such thing as "too much" loose change. Especially when someone else notices that you have it and starts scheming up ways to spend it for you. :garamet:

My contempt is for self-absorbed fucksticks who think it's acceptible to make everyone nearby adjust around their divided concentration, and act like I'm the unreasonable one when I get pissed about having to avoid someone who wandered into my lane, or sitting through a green light while they finish their text.

Also on the road, and during real life conversations with people. Next on the agenda is standing outside shopping malls and shouting it at strangers.

Hee! Verizon's website had trouble handling the demand during the announcement. Yeah, nobody's interested in this.
