I'm helping a friend whose laptop was on crack out by reinstalling everything for them. I just put the free version of AVG on it... and no amount of updates will cure it saying it's out of date.

Did they just completely stop updating the definitions for the free version?

Did you install it straight from the website? I do know they did a major upgrade and stopped supporting the older version.

Not that I'm aware of, mine is still working fine. Sometimes it needs the computer to reboot to finish the update, but usually it just automatically updates once a day.

I'm still using AVG Free. Unless something happened in the last two weeks (I've been away), it should be fine.

Try downloading a new copy and reinstalling.

I had to reinstall it at New Year there after my computer got AIDS, went in no problem. Make sure you take the latest version off the site and not one you have stored on back ups etc.

Yeah, it's weird. I got the latest version. Guess I'll have to give it a go later on.

Um, isn't AVG designed to prevent your comp from getting AIDS?
I use it too and my computer has been gone a bit funny lately, wondering if a virus has slip through the net and buggered things up...

This might sound like a silly question, but is the computer's date and time accurate?

You know what, I gave it back to him, but... I didn't think to check that.

It's just that in a lot of programs, if the computers date and time are inaccurate, it incorrectly reports that something is out of date when it is not.

Hell, used to be, with Windows Update, if your date and time were really off, it'd just error out. Made no damn sense.
