    Here's what Biden calls for:

    • Direct payments of $1,400 to most Americans, bringing the total relief to $2,000, including December's $600 payments
    • Increasing the federal, per-week unemployment benefit to $400 and extending it through the end of September
    • Increasing the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour
    • Extending the eviction and foreclosure moratoriums until the end of September
    • $350 billion in state and local government aid
    • $170 billion for K-12 schools and institutions of higher education
    • $50 billion toward Covid-19 testing
    • $20 billion toward a national vaccine program in partnership with states, localities and tribes
    • Making the Child Tax Credit fully refundable for the year and increasing the credit to $3,000 per child ($3,600 for a child under age 6)

I can get behind that platform, given the circumstances of the last year or so. The country is hurting and needs extraordinary measures. Not least because of the rampant incompetence of the Trump administration.

The Very Online Left is declaring that Biden is a traitor because, even though adding $1,400 to $600 for a total of $2,000 is what every Democrat including Bernie and AOC was calling for, they've suddenly decided that it's REALLY supposed to be $600 plus $2,000 for a total of $2,600.

People are fucking stupid sometimes.

Though, what we really need is a regular infusion of stimulus money on a monthly basis until we get closer to stable, not a just a few grand given out 8 months apart. Isn't Canada handing out $2,000 per month?

I think I saw AOC tweet that after Biden's speech last night.

FW is right, though. Regular stimulus payments, even at a lesser amount, would do more good than a couple of grand every nine months.

Originally it was $2000 a month with no taxes withheld, now it's $1000 every two weeks with $100 withheld upfront for taxes.

Still. It's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. If the US government really wanted to stimulate the economy, they would have done the same and given a weekly or by weekly check rather than a huge hand out to corporations.

While I don't consider this something to hang Biden over, I have never once seen anyone say this $600 was a down payment or anything of the sort.

Leftists won't go hanging noises for Biden and Harris--because that would be unwoke to do so in Harris's case--but it definitely has the whiff of a backpedal. The overall plan looks solid, but that extra $600 will not kill any of them.

Edit: and yes to steady payments of such until this is over. I don't even mind taxes being withheld from it but this back and forth fight over paltry beans of lump sums once a year has got to end.

Oh, I'm not complaining at all. I don't need it, but I know people whose industries are on their second lockdown now, and those payments are literally the difference between life and death.

Real life example: I've been pondering having wiring installed in my living room to set up surround sound speakers. If it can be done (it's probably going to require working in the crawl space) it's going to be about a $300 job. That would go to a local AV service. I'd probably also get a good (not extravagant) set of front speakers. I'd probably have the same company set them up, clean up the wiring and calibrate the system. That's probably another $150. That's money going right into the pocket of a family run, local business.

I was going to use my stimulus to help pay rent or pay down on some medical debt. But I like your idea better.

People need to calm the fuck down. This is $1400 more than we'd be getting with a Republican Senate. Let's heal and move on.

That article is from when there was a standalone bill on Mitch McConnell's desk to increase the check amount from $600 to $2,000. AOC knew it -- it was her bill being discussed. Everybody knew it. But since there's a segment of the party that is determined to hate Biden and Harris no matter what, that segment has decided to move the goalposts.

Would be nice to have some details on that student loan payment deferral. That's been the big thing I've gotten out of all this. Its so far a cumulative $16,000 in savings! Far outpaces my paycut.

Forgiving $10-$15k would be enough for me to lower my debt-to-income ratio enough for me to buy a condo, even with my income in California.

Fine bill, but I am wondering how a $15 minimum wage is going to pass the Senate.

I would imagine the full $15 won’t, at least immediately. But probably SOME minimum wage hike will happen and $15 is popular enough that it won’t be seen as an unrealistic opening bid.

Biden has probably also ranked each bulletpoint in the order of what he expects to give up to get a compromise passed.

It's already becoming the de-facto standard. I saw a "Help Wanted" sign on a Subway shop today that offered "up to $15 per hour". It may not be as much of a reach as you think, especially if it's phased in.

One of the things that shitty employers don't recognize is that if they're paying shit wages, nobody cares if they lose their job or not, since they can easily walk into another one that's paying them the same low wages.

On the one hand, $15 Minimum Wage being a slogan for 9 years helps in that everyone has heard it and it isn’t new.

On the other hand $15 in 2021 isn’t the same it was in 2012.
