According to all the studies that are telling me I'll get cancer I should have died 30 years ago.

For some reason I'd always thought "processed meat" was just stuff like hot dogs and bolagna. It never occurred to me that it was also bacon, or even, presumably, a pork shoulder that I smoked myself.

Yeah whatever. I'll eat what I like and die when my number is called. Life really is much easier when you look at it like that.

Surely it's been known for a long time that eating too much processed or red meat is bad for you. It's still fine in moderation.

Many cancer patients never thought that smoking hundreds of packs of cigarettes was bad for them and sued the tobacco companies when they got sick.

What can I say? Many Americans are willfully ignorant until it's time to accept responsibility for the bad choices they make. Then they point fingers and demand someone else pay for their mistakes. I expect lawsuits against the cattle industry any day now.

It's not about moderation. This study literally puts it on the same scale as smoking cigarettes.

It puts it in the same "category" - that of things which are known to cause cancer. That doesn't mean that it's of equal danger to smoking - or ingesting plutonium, which is also included.

I dunno. It's saying if you eat two pieces of bacon a day, your risk of colon cancer increases by up to 20%. What would moderation be in that context? Half a piece of bacon a day?

Bacon only once or twice a week, not to exceed a total of 4 slices.

If you really want to eliminate cancer, simply vaporize the earth. No more DNA will be left to get corrupted. :)

Fair enough, but I guess my real point was that I don't even think smoking a pack a day increases your risk of getting lung cancer as much as 18 or 20%. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Er, as far as I know, smoking increases your risk of lung cancer by orders of magnitude. That is, something like 2000%.

I probably would have gone with a picture of a non-extinct carnivore...like a great white shark, but that's just me I guess.

A lot of people are criticizing the study for bad data validation and for say even with the bad data validation the effect is extremely small. It also didn't control for a lot of other factors such as environmental pollution and the vast number of chemicals found in modern consumer products.

Seriously, about the only place most people it mustard is on processed meats: Sliced ham, hamburgers, hot dogs, bratwurst, etc. Almost everyone eats processed meats with mustard. Mustard is made up of hard little seeds that jam into your colon, and the seeds contain allyl isothiocyanate, which induces lacrimation, hyperalgesia, inflammation, and neuroexcitation. Mustard itself is a topical irritant.

I put mustard on my soft pretzels. Spicy brown mixed with a bit of horseradish. Soft pretzels with mustard are the bee's knees.

Peter Brueghel, The Fight Between Carnival and Lent, 1559.

One the red cart being pulled at bottom center is a baker with bread and pretzels, followed by people carrying bread and pretzels. The person in red with the blue apron, right behind the red cart, seems to be carrying the pretzel at his waist via a strap or belt. If you put mustard on your pretzel and then carry it around like that, it will probably make a mess, not that I'm saying you routinely sashay around the office with a soft pretzel hanging off your belt, even once you realize the genius of it.

There's a really good picture that I can't find in one of the medieval fighting manuals, I think from the 1400's. Two combatants are going at it, with the text explaining the particular attack and defense, but off to the side is a dwarf holding up a pretzel. We have never figured out what the heck it means.

Maybe it's a picture of a battle to the death. The pretzel is a consolation prize.

From what I understand it's not the meat itself which causes cancer but the preservatives used in the meat...

But do they not use the same preservatives in chicken and fish? I see only red meat mentioned.

i know people are often worried about the mercury content in fish...

I used to know a guy who would make herbal tea, squeeze in part of a lemon, and then add a small dash of yellow mustard. I always thought he was weird though he claimed it prevented and cured colds.

I hear the ancient Romans used to mix it in wine. They were big on spiced wines probably because their wine often sucked.
