If I understand correctly, the five crewmembers all managed to escape the boat. This is sadly an all to common occurrence in maritime disasters. The crew surviving while the passengers fate is much less assured.

we call it the @Dayton Kitchens effect. The crew fucks up and realizes if they run away everyone might die and no one will be able to convict them.

I think the crew were topside piloting (is that the proper maritime term?) the boat. Something blocked the passengers from escaping. Perhaps there was nothing the crew could do.
    Again, the investigation is ongoing.

I dove from the Conception's sister ship, Truth, in 1983. The boats are similar design, with a single stairway to the bunks below deck. The paying passengers sleep in the bunks, crew sleeps in the pilot house on the top deck.

The fire broke out at 3 in the morning and burned rapidly. The ships are current with all Coast Guard inspections with well seasoned crews and knowledgeable passengers (all certified divers).

With no information I'd guess oxygen tanks (pure O2) used to augment compressed air (commonly called nitrox) may have fed the fire for it to burn so rapidly.

Pro tip: when the crew is abandoning ship, keep up with them.

There's definitely something wrong with this picture. Both exits being blocked doesn't make sense at first glance. Hopefully the Coast Guard will get to the bottom of this.

The habit of ship crews abandoning their passengers is thousands of years old. The crew of the ship transporting Paul and his guards to Rome tried to abandon the ship when it was stricken by a violent storm. Paul warned the soldiers about what the crew was planning (they had deployed a small boat to escape in but gave a pretext to do so) and the soldiers cut the ropes to the boat before the crew could abandon them.

There was only one stairway to access below decks. No other escape route.

It's crazy that there would be no other way out of the area.

    Most boats have emergency exits.

As Bailey said I do hope they died from smoke inhalation and not the fire itself.

What the fuck is wrong with you?

I don't know if the crew is responsible for the fire. This could be a terrible accident but it's known that the crew is basically on the deck above everyone else. In this fire there was no way for the lower deck to evacuate so only the crew survived. They didn't abandon the passengers. There was simply no way for the passengers to get out.

We'll know all the details eventually. Perhaps the crew did nothing wrong. But I'm always suspicious when most of the survivors of a maritime disaster are members of the crew rather than passengers.

    Seriously.

If you're in the position of having to abandon ship, there won't be any time to wait for stragglers. It's a BFD and fuck Dayton with his tinhat bullshit.

No one knows what caused it. It seems the only exit was blocked by fire but what caused it is still an open question.

I was wrong: sleeping quarters are required to have two exits. Conception had these but apparently both were blocked by fire.

On a sinking boat, you won't have time to do much else.

We ran abandon ship drills in the Navy all the time. We have designated spots to muster up at, but the reality is people will die in the event that we had to leave a sinking ship....I mean, besides the cryptos that have to destroy as much data as possible as the boat floods out. :(

I suppose easy for me to say not being in that situation, but if I'm trapped by fire in an enclosed space on a boat, I'm going through the fire. It's a @#$&ing boat; the fire may burn me, but I can't be more than a few seconds away from water.

The owners have petitioned in federal court to limit payout to victims to $0.00. Apparently this is SOP in maritime accidents based on an 1851 law.

The boat may have had disconnected smoke alarms as found on the sister boat, Vision. Also the design of the escape hatch made exiting difficult in the best of conditions but also opened to the same area of the fire (common cabin/galley).

Some talk concerning a possible electrical fire caused by charging devices that would have been left charging in the common cabin (lights, phones, etc).

So the fire started in the galley?

it's a large cabin that has a food prep area, seating to eat and just kick back when you're not sleeping or in the water. Technically I guess it's the galley. Here's a pic from their website:

People must've been overcome by smoke. If I'm in that room and need to get out, those windows aren't gonna stop me.

They were below this area in the bunk room. No windows (or portholes either).
